Couple hurt after falling from cliff edge

Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight

A COUPLE suffered injuries last night when they fell 30ft off a cliff edge on the Isle of Wight.

The man and woman- both in their 50s- were walking at about 7pm in Freshwater Bay near to the Albion Hotel when they fell.

The pair were taking a shortcut to a secluded beach for a romantic picnic, it is believed.

But a major search and rescue operation was sparked when they fell and the man raised the alarm using his mobile phone.

Needles Coastguard teams including the emergency Rescue Helicopter 104, police and firefighters were all called to the scene.

They scaled down the cliff to rescue the pair, from Newport.

The woman was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital after she suffered injuries to her hip, back, chest and arm.

The man hurt his finger and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being transferred to St Mary's Hospital in Newport by land ambulance.

The Coastguard said their rescue team trained especially in cliff rescue managed to get the couple to safety on Tennyson Down.

Something not right here!

Who goes for a 'romantic picnic' down a cliff path at 7pm on an October evening having travelled all the way from their home in Newport?

She has injuries to her hip, back, chest and arm - he meanwhile hurt his finger!

One possibility:

She, wearing high heels, took a tumble down the path, thus explaining her injuries. They happened to be holding hands when this occurred, explaining his injuries.

Shouldn't be jumping to conclusions here, "romantic picnic"? I have heard some euphemisms in my time but that takes the biscuit.

Is 'taking the biscuit' a euphemism?

The reports states they were heading to a beach for the picnic... not just down a cliff path.

Independent Thought... do you know some beaches they could have gone to instead in Newport?

Why can't people just read a report without jumping to conclusions....

I'll amend it

She, wearing high heels and carrying a picnic basket, took a tumble down the path, thus explaining her injuries. They happened to be holding hands when this occurred, explaining his injuries

Some people make it incredibly easy to jump to conclusions!

Who goes on a romantic walk and picnic on a cliff to a secluded beach on a chilly damp autumn evening as it's getting dark?

Answer:

Two people who aren't quite the full ticket,

or two people enjoying or trying to spice up their sex life,

or two people having an affair.

Actually I think they're quite reasonable conclusions to jump to and probably along the lines of what many people reading this story have thought too! :)
