AN environmentalist climbed an oak tree near her Hampshire home in a bid to save it from the chainsaws.

Jane Downs scaled the 12ft tree in Frosthole Close, Fareham, using a ladder before staging a two-hour protest.

Fareham Borough Council sent workmen to remove the two oak trees and a hawthorn on the green yesterday morning amid fears they were causing subsidence in a nearby property.

But the 47-year-old, concerned about the environmental impact of the works, was already in one of the oaks – and came down only after being told that the tree would not be cut down that day.

Further inquiries are due to take place over the proposed tree works and council bosses say residents will be informed before any action is taken.
