ENGINEERS were today due to begin work to repair a faulty cable that has left hundreds of Southampton homes and businesses without phones or Internet connections.

As reported in yesterday’s Daily Echo, properties in Swaythling, Mansbridge and Woodmill have so far been left without working landlines for 11 days.

Businesses have complained the fault is costing them money as they are forced to turn away customers, while worried elderly residents say they have been left without their “lifeline”.

The telecommunications firm said last night it had now received permission to install temporary traffic lights on Portswood Road, outside the B&Q store, to allow its engineers to safely carry out repair work to the cable.

The engineers will also build a new junction box to house and protect the new cable.

A BT spokeswoman said it was not clear how long the work to restore the service would take.
