THE racing world will stage a fitting tribute to a Southampton powerboat racer who will be laid to rest today with more than 1,000 people expected at his funeral.

Mike Lovell, pictured, 27, died of multiple injuries sustained in an accident in the final race of the national powerboat series in Weymouth last month.

A parade of Ferraris and Porsches will follow the funeral cortege from Brookspeed in Portswood, where Mike worked as a workshop manager and race engineer, to his funeral service at St Mary’s Church in Sholing at 1pm.

Race teams in uniform will form a guard of honour.

The Peters & May powerboat he was racing will later be on display in the car park of the Plough Inn in Bursledon, where friends, family and racing colleagues will gather to celebrate his life.

Mike, known to friends as the G-Man, was competing in the final race of the P1 SuperStock UK series in Weymouth when his powerboat hit a wave from the wash of another powerboat and rolled, throwing him and his navigator into the water.

They were struck by another boat.
