SOME of Hampshire's Olympic and Paralympic heroes have this afternoon been honoured at a special London 2012 celebration.

Hamble's Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Dani King was among those invited to the event at Eastleigh's Fleming Park Leisure Centre.

Eastleigh's David Smith, who won Paralymic silver and bronze in boccia, Chandler's Ford brothers Adam and David Knott, who represented the nation at goalball, and gymnast Laura Edwards, who narrowly missed selection for Team GB, were also at the jamboree.

Eastleigh Borough Council organised the celebration to honour the achievements of competitors from the area who took part in the summer sports extravaganza.

The get together was also open to borough residents who participated in London 2012 as gamesmakers, torch bearers and officials.

The celebration was the latest honour for team pursuit queen Dani King who already has a gold medal around her neck, a celebratory stamp and a postbox painted gold to mark her stunning achievement.

Her name has also been put permanently on the map - as a cycleway in Hamble.

Meanwhile the event was also a chance for local sports groups to showcase what they have on offer with a series of demonstrations throughout the afternoon.
