Anger grows over Itchen Bridge charges
6:10am Sunday 7th October 2012 in News
Anger among motorists is growing over new pay machines on Southampton's Itchen Bridge.
They have spoken out after tolls on the Itchen Bridge in Southampton became automated, with staff replaced by machines that do not give change.
Tolls were introduced to “regulate traffic flows”, although automated tolls are said to improve traffic flows.
Critics include Patsy Harcuss, who suffers from arthritis and a spinal disability. She has to add £1.20 on her journey every time she goes to see her doctor and make the return journey home.
Southampton City Council says the toll does not pay for the initial cost of the bridge but to maintain it.
