I'm going to be a prisoner in my own home

Sam Slater, 24, with sons Callum, two, and Kai, seven months Sam Slater, 24, with sons Callum, two, and Kai, seven months

“WE will be prisoners in our own home.”

Those are the words of a young single mum after council chiefs revealed plans to carry out repairs to the lifts in her Southampton tower block.

Sam Slater, 24, who lives on the third floor of Highlands House, in Woolston, says she and her three children face being “trapped” in their flat until next year, when the work begins later this month.

Mother-of-three, Sam, who suffers from a serious heart condition and relies on a pacemaker to keep her heart beating regularly, said it would be “physically impossible” for her to haul her two-seater pushchair up and down three flights of stairs every day, during the four-month project.

She claims she could even be forced to keep her eldest son, Kevin, four, off school, because she has no other family to look after her two younger children, Callum, two, and seven-month-old Kai.

Sam told the Daily Echo that housing bosses had sent letters to residents warning them of the plans and appealed for people to come forward if they wanted to be temporarily re-homed. But Sam has hit out at councillors after her pleas for help fell on deaf ears.

She said: “The council told me that arrangement was aimed at elderly people, not people with children. They are discriminating against single mums by only offering certain people help.

“The housing officer came out and even he couldn’t get my buggy up the stairs.

“If he can’t manage it how am I supposed to?

‘Disgusting’ “With my pacemaker I can’t physically cope with walking up and down the stairs all the time. I’ll probably end up in hospital if I try to, but they won’t move us out.

“It’s disgusting.

“I’m not asking for a palace. I don’t care where the council move us. I just want somewhere we can sleep.”

Southampton City Council’s housing boss, Cllr Warwick Payne, who also looks after the Woolston ward, said that he had spoken to Sam and was now “making enquiries on her behalf” in a bid to find her temporary accommodation.

He added: “I have spoken to the housing officers, but at the moment I’m in the same position as Sam in that I am waiting to hear if there’s anything we can do.

“I recognise that she has a medical condition and because of that we should do everything we can to help her.”

Why do people have children and then worry about how to care for them, i might be naive but i always thought that you gave great thought about how you would provide for children before you had them, but then things are different now you just have them knowing full well that they will be provided for. You know i know and so do the council know that this is just another attempt at that nice house down the road.

I just knew that within one or two posts that some knee-jerk reaction **** would be along to have a pop at this woman. I thought it would be along the lines of the 'why doesn't she just move' strain of idiocy often found on these boards, but no it's the 'she's only doing this to get a bigger council house' strain of idiocy instead. I'm sure you all think you're 'keeping it real' and 'telling it like it is' but in reality you show yourselves up to be compassionless cynics. it's sad that your outlook on life seems always to be tainted by this compulsion towards cynicism and hatred of others in a less fortunate position than you.

I feel for this woman, but would she rather get in a faulty lift! the council seem to get criticised for not doing anything, then get criticised when they do! I am sure they cannot think about everyones personal circumstances, when carrying out repairs. This is not really news, its life for the average person! At times you have to deal with it!!!

Welcome to broken Britain, the only country in the world where you can simply decide not to work yet still have as many children as you like, be housed, fed and clothed by the state, and yet STILL have the audacity to moan about it! The only person responsible for putting this young woman in this situation is herself, its well past time she became an adult and stood on her own two feet. Life is difficult for everyone in this economic climate, I'm sick to death of struggling by working all hours and barely seeing my own family when people like this sit on their backsides courtesy of working people taxes. Enough is enough.

So refreshing to read a post by a complete antisocial uncaring cretin. How do you know this woman's condition was not due to her last pregnancy and that her partner is not deceased or ran away from a difficult situation? For all you know this girl may be a heroine determined to do her best for her children, despite a massive handicap.

So she was healthy enough to have a kid & live off the state with a property provided for her but she can't get up & down staircases?
To say she has a heart condition ?doesn't carrying a child in pregnancy & giving birth put a strain on an unhealthy heart?
she doesn't seemed to have cared about that when she got pregnant does she?
So now we should all feel sorry for her? where's the father? how's he contributing?

Seriously what a joke. She's 24, on benefits. So she can just keep having children. I am not knocking heart problems, however it must be a really big strain on her heart, being over weight and carrying three children, being pregnant, and obviously intercourse activity puts strain on the heart. I feel aggrieved, that I work so long hours to pay for people like her!!!

"It's not only the rich that should be allowed to have their kids just when they want" - that's priceless!!! So those in society responsible enough to work hard and build a stable home with their own finances before having children have got it wrong have they? The sooner this government stop these freeloaders from leeching off of the rest of us the better! Having children isn't a right, it's a responsibility, and that responsibility should always rest solely with the parents, NOT the rest of society.

I Agree Forest Resident, having children is a responsibility not a right. Like owning a car for example, we pay for our own car! You should only do, own and be responsible for what you can pay and afford yourself!

Wow, I see the cretins are crawling out of the woodwork on this one, "She's overweight". How so? Would you be willing to be with her if she was a twig? "she's on benefits" Does the article say she's on benefits? Do you know her personally? Most likely no to both, "what about the father/s?" I think if they were going to help in any way they would have done so but obviously the gutless ****/s don't want to know her or the kids, "She's faking to get a bigger council house down the road" This one annoys me the most, HOW THE FECK WOULD YOU KNOW IF SHE'S FAKING OR NOT?!?! It's not like pacemakers are made to be visible, sure she might have had it when she had her children, sure sex gets the heart going a little, no more than a brisk walk would do, as for giving birth, you know there's something known as a Caesarean section, a pacemaker CANNOT work if the person who has it fitted is doing overly strenuous work, such as keeping hold of a 4 year old AND carrying another 2 children up in a pushchair as one of them can't walk yet and the 2 year old would never make it up those stairs, plus it would be dangerous for a 2 year old to try climbing those stairs on their own because to them, those little steps are bloody mountains and would be like me trying to climb 6 steps at once, to who said she's faking, overweight, only trying to get a bigger house, thinks she MUST be on benefits or just making a mountain out of a mole hill, just hope that you never find yourselves in a position where something you need to get around to do stuff isn't taken away, otherwise you'll know what it's like.

When I delivered leaflets many blocks of flats had prams at the bottom of the stairs or under them doesn't this block have that facility?
Please tell me the video didn't look staged?
Is this another person trying to jump the points system to get a house?
Sorry but I know of women who have a pacemaker put in when they're young & they're told the strain of chil birth or even carrying a child could be fatal so exactly how bad is this ladies condition?
as another poster has said she needs to lose weight & I'm sure any doctor treating a person with as bad a condition as she say's she has would be insisting on her losing weight.
In many blocks of flats some four to six storey high there are no lifts.
Are you telling me she would have turned down a flat if there was no lift?
She had three kids before she could afford a place to live or to support even one so sorry I can't feel sorry for her.
We should take these people put them in some where like the TA/Army cadet barracks in Millbrook road get one to look after the kids & the rest of them go to work until they can afford a property to buy or rent whilst still working let's see how many want to have a baby then?

What you're suggesting wouldn't work.
Why not?
Ginger I was a single guy & my mum chucked me out the council back then said I had years to wait for a bedsit.
so even though I was homeless & earning a low wage they wouldn't help me I would have welcomed any roof over my head,.
In the end I slept on peoples sofas ( Many Years different people) but then got a job where I could afford a private bedsit.
My single sister needed to move out & low & behold she got a flat straight away with no kids?
If you offer a life with no going to work & the people of this country supporting your living standards as long as you say I don't know who the father is or he's on the dole & a place free to live in people like this will take advantage of it & want more.
We need to make it so it's not an attractive thing to do that's why I agree with the welfare reforms that are coming.
Surely in your other posts you advocate work as a way out of this mess so how do you get these people to work?

I'm one of those people then, I've known and know people with heart conditions, a couple of people I've known and know even have pacemakers and they said to me that the most strenuous thing they could do was have sex and the girl I knew who had one was told she could have kids but would have to give birth by caesarean, no matter what.

Create jobs, that's how, it's already unattractive to be on benefits, at least to me it is but people are on them BECAUSE there aren't enough jobs to go round.

Is it just me or does no one else find four months to fix one poxy lift to be shocking? That's 600 manhours for god's sake!

She should do her heart a favour and lose twenty pounds because if there is a fire she will have to take the stairs.

What, you want to make her into a stick? Well done, that would still put strain on her heart.

If this was a story by a non council resident who paid their own way in their own flat then the story would not be printed would it?!? There would be no story as there would be no way of being 'Re-housed', people who have pay their own way are left to sort the problems themselves!
You all mention not knowing her situation, fair comment BUT if the father(S) were deceased or had been abusive or anything like that it would have been printed in the story! The fact that it has not screams of the fact that this girl is another statistic who fell pregnant without a second thought as to a stable environment or money!
My son is now 7 and only now am I in a position to be able to afford another child so have had to wait to be able to afford it!!!
Would she prefer the lift be left faulty and never be fixed - the council are acting and fixing it - she will moan if they do moan if they dont!

Did I say 33 million+ were unemployed? No, because that would be stupid as the bulk of that figure is made up of retired people or people too young or too sick to work and like I keep telling you, there isn't enough jobs to go round, that's why 2.5million people can't find a job, though a minority of those are probably stupid kids who have just left school who are all with the big thing at the moment and saying "I don't need a job because I have swag", saying they have membership to a group called "Secretly We Are Gay" won't help them and they'll probably end up on the street, at least maybe then it will show them how stupid "SWAG" is... The younger generations are totally lost and I thought my generation was lost, the government needs to invest in manufacturing and production to export more than we import, it's the only way to get as many people as possible into work and to save the crumbling economy in one hit.

Okay let's forget about bleeding heart Inform Al for a minute.
From Beast of the Muppets to Inform Kermt Al & his miss Piggy
Create jobs, that's how, it's already unattractive to be on benefits, at least to me it is but people are on them BECAUSE there aren't enough jobs to go round.
If over 3million Eastern Europeans can find work why can't our 2.5million?
Actually the British population is over 62million and still growing and less than 29 million people in Britain are in work
and the reason so many can't find jobs is as I say, not enough jobs to go round, I have nothing against the eastern Eiropeans and that, they can be great people but employers look at them as cheap Labour as they don't expect to be paid much when they come here so they often get the jobs first, my sister works down at the docks loading cars onto boats and she tells me that she's one of the only English people there, so in a way, the fact that there aren't enough jobs is a twin blade sword, the employers give them jobs thinking it's nothing then they tell people back home who then come here to work as well but no, you probably think there will magically be enough jobs for everyone, stop living up your arse and get with the times, this isn't 1920 where there was a surplus of jobs.
So you think there's 33million unemployed then?
There's 2.5 million which has actually gone down in the last year.
Now please answer my question instead of spouting left wing rhetoric .
Why can't this 2.5million find work yet over 3million Eastern Europeans can?
But what of the 3million+ Eastern Europeans who've miraculously found work that you say isn't out there?
