A WEEKEND celebrating the life of Hampshire’s most famous medieval king is taking place this month.

A lecture on the life of King Alfred the Great kicks off the weekend on Friday, October 26.

Dr Ryan Lavelle from the University of Winchester will speak about the king and the wars with the Vikings from 7.30pm to 9pm at St Barthlomew’s Church, King Alfred Place.

On October 27 there will be activities in King Alfred Place with people dressed in Anglo-Saxon costume and displays in the church.

Churchwarden Alys Blakeway will be leading a short walk on the theme Bringing Hyde Abbey Alive.

Community project Hyde900, celebrating 900 years of Hyde Abbey, will be launching their Stones of Hyde Abbey project.

The day will finish with choirs from the University of Winchester performing at 7.30pm in the church.

A service commemorating the life of the king will be at 9.30am on the Sunday.
