New £40m development plan for former Ordnance Survey site in Southampton approved
4:16pm Wednesday 17th October 2012 in News
By Matt Smith, Politics and business reporter
The former Ordnance Survey site in Romsey Road before demolition. Almost 180 homes may now be built there.
THE developer behind the new headquarters for Southampton mapping agency Ordnance Survey has won new outline approval to redevelop OS’s former home in the city, bringing 150 jobs.
Councillors backed Kier Property’s £40m plans to build 179 homes, new offices, shops, a restaurant and pub on the former Ordnance Survey site in Romsey Road.
The redevelopment of the eastern half of the old OS site could bring 150 jobs.
Kier has slightly reduced the number of homes and office space previously earmarked for the site and reduced the height of proposed gateway building along Romsey Road from six to three stories.
The developer now plans to build 89 houses and 90 flats around a central park on the site of OS’s former headquarters, the William Roy Building, which once housed 5,000 workers. It was demolished earlier this year.
A spokeswoman said: “We are delighted that our outline planning application for the Romsey Road development in Southampton was approved on a unanimous basis.”
She said planning agreements would be exchanged next month for formal planning permission to be issued in mid-November.
Kier, which has regional offices in Southampton, acquired the 24-acre site as part of a deal to develop a new landmark headquarters for OS at Adanac Park in Nursling.
The company has been behind a string of major developments in Southampton’s in recent years including a landmark new £32m police headquarters for Hampshire Constabulary and the £15m Sea City Museum extension to Southampton’s City Council’s Civic Centre.
Housebuilder Taylor Wimpey has already started to build 193 new homes on the 11-acre western part of the former OS site.
Compass House, currently occupied by HM Customs & Excise among others, has been retained and refurbished.

southy wrote:Why?
There needs to be a new council ward in this area.
The electorate of the 16 Southampton wards range from 9723 to 13919.
All the wards in the surrounding area to the OS site contain between 10,000 and 11,500 - all quite average.
There is NO demographic need for ANY new wards in this area.
This new development will not distort ward population size to any extent that would require what you suggest.

If they are the numbers that the returning office quoted then that is the number off people that voted, and not the number of homes or the number of people registered or the number of people that are of age to vote.
Turn out for the Redbridge Ward was low, it was around the 1/3rd turn out.
the one who don't have a clue is your self, and if you like to come round here I can prove it, I have the paper work that will prove it and it do not inclued every single home with in the Redbridge ward.
You will learn should you ever put your self up to be elected.

The figures I quote are the numbers on the electoral roll for each ward at the time of the 2012 local elections. Full stop.
It has NOTHING to do with "old Redbridge Village Boundry", NOTHING to do with the number of homes, NOTHING to do with the numbers who turned out to vote. It is simply the number of people registered to vote in each ward – i.e. THE ELECTORATE; the very people you need to woo if you want to be elected.
If you can’t understand simple concepts like this, I suggest you give up. Yet again you show your ignorance of matters electoral and your inability to provide accurate data when posting on this site.

Not every house hold as some one registered to vote, there way to many homes that are not registed, and I have told you there over 13,000 homes in the Redbridge Ward, Example there 79 homes in my road and about 24 homes do not have a single person registered to vote, and if what Lee as told me is right those new homes near the train station only about 10 people are registed to vote and its like this all over the Redbridge ward, where people do not bother now to register, because they will not vote for any Right Wing Party and they no longer trust Labour to do the right thing for the majority, and once people stop voting its hard to get them back to the polls.
And the reason I deliver to none register is to try and get them back and register to vote again and to the polls again.
Get involve then you might start to relise the whole of it and not a small part of it all.
The returning office only knows the number that did vote, the total number of people that have registered, and the result.
He do not know what is the total of number of people that are of age to be able to vote nore do he know the total number of homes there is in each area, and it is here where you do not know, unless you stand for election. then you get to see the big gaps in the homes that do not have any body registered to vote.
The decline started to happen in the mid 80's, when Kinnock took over the Labour Party

You have it completely wrong.
Need I remind you of your foolishness over the rules for how local by-elections are called; as well as your stupidity in insisting that Council Tax goes to central government with only a proportion being returned at the end of the year?
You were totally wrong on both issues – as you are on this.

You were wrong, wrong, wrong. The ward with the largest number of voters is Bargate. The old OS was not in Bargate.

And I quoted facts for you there are well over 13,000 homes in the Redbridge ward, And I think there should be lest another ward added, because a single person can not working a ward of this size can not compleat the whole ward on there own, and you should be able to cover every single home in the 4 weeks that is allowed to do electioneering

They lived in 6,197 households (or homes as you call them).

The fact that Bargate has lots of shops and offices is totally irrelevant. The reason its electorate and population has increased so much over the last decade is because of the large number of new households created by the likes of Barrett and Linden in redeveloping the redundant office and warehouse space in the Queens Park to lower High Street area into sizable and tall apartment blocks.
