POLICE talked a woman off the parapet of the Itchen Bridge in Southampton.

Officers spoke to the 28-year-old for around 50 minutes after a call to the bridge at around 2.45pm yesterday.

Earlier reports that someone had fallen into the river were discounted after a 40-minute search by lifeboats from Cowes and Calshot.

The woman was detained by the police.

Max Rimington, the Cowes boat helm, said: “As we approached the Itchen Bridge we saw a woman who was on the edge of the bridge. Behind her was an ambulance and a number of police.

“Although eventually the woman was talked to safety by the police, we were told that another woman has been seen to have already jumped from the bridge. The lifeboats then carried out a thorough search of the river, assisted by police and mobile coastguard units on both banks, and a Solent coastguard helicopter.”

The search was called off after 40 minutes.
