MURDERED grandmother
Georgina Edmonds was tortured
by her killer who
stabbed her repeatedly with
a knife, it has been revealed.
The 77-year-old was discovered with
puncture wounds across the top of her
body as well as fatal head injuries.
It is thought whoever bludgeoned Mrs
Edmonds to death may have inflicted
the stab wounds, using a kitchen knife,
as he tried to make her reveal her personal
identity number (PIN) for her
cash card.
The brutal details of her death have
been revealed today - two months to the
day since the pensioner was found dead
in the kitchen of her home in
Brambridge. The Daily Echo understands
Mrs Edmonds suffered multiple
wounds across the
top of her body,
both front and
back.
It is thought the
killer may have
gone to the picturesque
cottage
where she had
lived for 30 years
armed with the
knife - described
as a paring knife
with a three-inch
blade. The weapon has so far not been
recovered despite extensive searches of
the area and the river. It is not thought
to have belonged to her.
Mrs Edmonds was found dead at her
home on Friday, January 11. The murderer
is still at large and police are sure
he is from the local community.
Today they urged people to search
their conscience and come forward,
fearing he may strike again.
Detective chief inspector Paul Barton
said: "Our feeling is that whoever
killed Mrs Edmonds tortured her with
the knife. It may be that the attacker
took that knife with them after the
killing as, suffice to say, there was no
knife left at the scene.
"We know that a man tried to use the
card and failed later that night. Maybe
Mrs Edmonds refused to give the number,
gave him the wrong number deliberately
or the number was written
down wrong or forgotten.
"Whatever the situation, the force
used in relation to the head injuries she
suffered alone was horrendous. To have
subjected an elderly woman to that
kind of torture while she was alive is
horrific. There are no other words to
describe it."
Since the early days of the murder
probe detectives working on the investigation,
called Operation Columbian,
have maintained that the answer to
who is responsible lies within the local
community.
Det Chief Insp
Barton added; "I
would ask people
to consider what
has happened, consider
the brutality
and search their
conscience. I am
sure that whoever
did this will have
told someone they
know by now.
"We don't want
to raise fears but
there is a real concern he may do this
again."
As part of the investigation, which
saw 250 police involved at its height,
other serious crime and homicides
have been monitored across the country
but there have not been any other
killings which are being linked.
Mrs Edmonds' body was
found by her son Harry,
who lives at neighbouring
Kingfisher
Lodge in
Brambridge near
O t t e r b o u r n e ,
along with a family
friend.
She had been
killed sometime
between 11.15am and
3.15pm having been repeatedly
hit over the head with a blunt
instrument. On that day she had been
visited by her hairdresser and had
made and eaten her lunch before her
killer struck at the cottage on the banks
of the River Itchen.
Det Chief Insp Barton, said: "At this
time we believe the weapon used to torture
Mrs Edmonds was possibly
a kitchen paring
knife or something
of similar shape
and size. This
weapon has not
yet been located.
Appealing for
information, he
added: "Do you
know or suspect
anybody that would
have had the opportunity
to commit this crime on Friday
January 11? Do you know or suspect
anybody of using the victim's stolen
ATM card at the Tesco Express,
Twyford Road, at 10.38pm on the same
day? Do you know anybody who has left
the area since the day of the murder or
who has stopped using the Tesco
Express store and ATM?
Have you noticed a change in behaviour
or character of any person but
particularly those that might have connections
either to Twyford Road or Kiln
Lane or both?"
Anyone with any information should
contact the Operation Columbian
investigation team at Hulse Road on
0845 045 4545 or call Crimestoppers
anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Alternatively information can be sent
to FREEPOST, OPERATION
COLUMBIAN or e-mailed to

i dont norally comment on te news stories but felt i had to as it seems that there some scumbags out there with no morals and no compassion. i bet they really felt like the big man/n when they were doing such a disgustng and vile act on a defencless pensioner, if someone had done this to my gran i'd hunt them down myself. Given the reent high profile murders in the uk in recent weeks i think its time to bring back the death penalty.

It is sad to think that she died in such a manner. It is sad to think that a killer is still loose and he could kill again.

Also when someone is convicted for life then they should never come out of prison.
There are no deterrents now and that is why crime is on the increase in this country.

Perhaps the banks could review and finally agree to implementing the "duress" PIN system in some way. That might have caught the killer quickly or at least alerted the Police to the crime minutes after in happened.

Yes I also think that death (Penalty) should be imposed on many murderers. Our society should make our politicians, to understand, the change of time and conditions around the world.
We have now an increasing over population around the world and it should be logic that Democracy should debate and implement, what group of people should be allowed to live and how many should be permitted to be born.
Selecting the good crops from the weeds, has always been implemented since time began.

I fully support capital punishment. I also know that the UK will never see it back until we have concluded the forthcoming energy wars.
In the meantime we should be doing everything possible to ensure that murderers have the hardest of times in prison - and build more to hold them rather than releasing criminals early.

I would put money on this having a link to Eastern Europe. Whilst there are many decent hard-working immigrants, we also have people entering this country from Eastern Europe with convictions for organised crime, violence, rape and murder without any checks being carried out.
You can expect to see crimes of this nature increase while we are being used as a dustbin for all the criminal scum in our continent.

The ability for people to travel unchecked from the far East of Europe to the South of Spain has many merits. But it has allowed a lot of bad guys to commit their crimes in Spain and remain under the Police radar.
What is worse IMO is that Spain, with its compulsory ID cards should be free of terrorism, crime and violence. At least that is what the UK ID card is going to help us defeat in the UK, isn't it?
The Government has promised to protect us by making all immigrants obtain an ID card to live and work in the UK in the near future. Trouble is an EU citizen doesn't need an ID card under this new scheme.

Government (was interupted by call) hasn't a clue how it is going to deal these issues in the UK and other EU Governments are just waking up to the problems they have created. All within a framework where the criminal is looked after and the fault lies elsewhere, often with the victim.

What sort of sick person can do such a thing to an elderly lady? Do they not have visions of there own Grandparents while they commiting such a sick act?
I'm sorry I am not a believer in the Death Penalty, but for someone who can stoop as low as this - I question wether I am write not to believe in it.
Even from reading this article I have a picture of my own grandparents come into my head. How can the maggot who done this not feel the same?
Whatever is left of our 'Book' the whole weight of it should be thrown at the maggot.

As far as murderers are concerned, let them die, as long as we have total assurance that it is the right person.

How sad that so many want a vengeful society, the death penalty has never been proven to be a deterrent, all it gives people is a feeling of vengence and revenge, says more about them really. I prefer a more adult society which tackles the issues which lead to the crime.

Predictable response..of course i'd be irate and would want personal revenge but that dosent prove anything 1 way or the other - the point i'm making is that i sincerely believe in a civiliased adult society and not a tit for tat vengeful, spiteful society. I would like a working deterrent. Thats just my view

It is perfectly clear from this and other murders/attacks that we do not live in a civilised society. There is a difference between petty revenge and making people accountable for their crimes.
I'd be very interested to know what deterrents you think could have prevented this atrocity.

Everyone would like to believe in a civilised society but those days are gone my friend. Introduce migrants from countries where "civilised societies" don't really exist, where gun and knife crime is rife and women are second class citizens and you are asking for crimes like this. Unsolved violent crimes will rise because these people will simply commit these crimes and return to the country of their origin.
Vengeful, spiteful..? How is it spiteful to wish the person who murdered your innocent grandmother is subjected to capital punishment?
What would be civilised and adult in this case? Some therapy and rehabilitation, then released to commit another violent crime when they've hoodwinked the authorities into believing they are "cured"?
Go back to your world Ian where the clouds and cuckoos can keep you company.

Perhaps we should all take this with a pinch of salt like yourself? Maybe you'd like to join the perpetrator in prison as his cellmate "wife" and take care of him while he does his time? With a bit of tlc from a do-gooding, Telegraph reading soft soaper like yourself, he'll be rehabilitated in no time at all.

Lets worry about the punishment when he/she has been found?
End of moan......

[/quote] Sorry, but what you've said has no basis in anything other than media driven hysteria and is overtly xenophobic.

Most of us want the death penalty for these kind of slimeballs but no chance of ever getting it back thanks to stupid governments and our European enslavement.
Prisons are full but we cannot build newere bigger basic ones because the money is flowing out of the UK and paying for our Vietnams in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I curse all wooly wishy washy mealy mouthed do-gooders who bang on about this subject.
Hang the scummy murderers and terrorists - it will save a fortune in prison costs and will remove the likely threat of re-offending.
It will be revenge for any families affected and offer soem closure.
Modern DNA (not entirely foolproof) plus irrefutable evidence should be the criteria to avoid the old cliches of former 'mistakes'
The Yanks are clearing Death Row in a few states - shame it's not all over.
We do live in a 'civilisd' society but are infested with the cancer of killers etc. Just need cutting out as a malignant threat

Could you post a link to the footage of the suspect at the ATM, which I recall seeing in the past. This could help catch the "man", not that he is one.

What's ridiculous is that if she fought back and had given the guy a black eye, the police would have her in irons and send her down for 5 years.
It's time to take the law into our own hands, because the people we have entrusted it to are spineless cowards (and that statement is directed to every spineless coward in uniform).
The only thing I see the UK police doing is chatting nicely to the chavs because deep down they are scared to death of them. Grown men at the mercy of teeny boppers. How sad.

as much as murderers deserve to die it would be an easy way out to give them the death penalty, if the other guys in prison new what they had done, they would be tortured on a daily basis, in fact we should have some sort of penalty that allows these people to be tortured

I think people who carry out these crimes should be given same treatment back, BUT without killing them, damage their skull to feel the intense pain this poor lady felt. Then cuts, slow and deep but not life threatening to the amount stabbings / cuts she recieved. May make the person think when his life sentance (if they ever got that) is over may preventing them hurting another again.
This attack scares me, as my own mother has no idea of her pin, her bank card is held with me and no money is kept in the home. I feel for the ladies family and for the elderly who have no close relations and stuggle along by themselves, and 95% percent of their week is soley spent on their own. Think on next time the older person next door wants a chat, you maybe only human contact they have had that day

This is so horrific and sickening to think whoever did this is still out there!
What this poor lady went to prior to death is utterley unthinkable.
And what makes it worse (if it could possibly get worse!) is this was a frail old lady BUT she was well enough to live idependantly and happy - some sick excuse for a human being did this to her completely taking that away from her aswel as her life - it makes me sick
