A DEVELOPER believes that the first houses could be built on the controversial Barton Farm site in Winchester as soon as 2012.
Cala Homes is poised to submit a planning application for 2,000 homes on the farmland on the northern edge of the city.
The company has been organising meetings with interested parties to discuss its masterplan.
It is committed to the scheme, despite the recession, arguing that the city needs the houses and that Barton Farm is the best location.
Cala says that its scheme will be the most sustainable and will provide a new primary school, nursery, GP surgery, community facilities and bus and cycle routes into the city centre.
The Daily Echo has learned that Cala will shortly be submitting a planning application, and is confident that it will be granted permission.
Public exhibitions will be held on Thursday, April 23, and Saturday, April 25.
The Save Barton Farm Group, which recently staged a march attended by 600 people, has vowed to carry on its campaign against the plans.
The campaigners argue that housing demand is currently being met without the need for such a major scheme.
