There is a finite amount of countryside, once it's gone, it's GONE.
There are streets and streets of empty houses up north, the government should be regenerating up there, not cramming everyone into the south!
The phrase 'public consultation' is meaningless, as all those fighting fluoridation, and also those fighting the changes being forced onto the New Forest will be able to tell you...

If you have children and family yourself I suppose that if they want houses you advise them to move up north to look for a new job and friends, I think not. I welcome the building of affordable homes for local young people - but will there be enough of that type here?
Of course this is only the first 2000 homes, so where will the other 10000 be built?

Winchester is a (on the whole) beautiful city, which should not be blighted by new developments.

Instead developers should be focusing on building on brownfield sites in Southampton and Basingstoke to facilitate the demand.

I agree that brownfield sites should be used but the mere fact that a city/town is beautiful needn't stop development on it's outskirts and push it elsewhere.
Incidentally I once met someone who thought Basingstoke was beautiful lol

The picture only seems to show part of the site because at the first public enquiry the plan covered both sides of the railway line. Follow the green arrow shown pointing east on the picture and the actual site goes further across and beyond the frame on the right of the picture.

I totally agree that Winchester is a beautiful city having been born and raised there but people still need to live in houses! If in years gone by housing was stopped there would be no Teg Down, Harestock, Weeke, Highcliff, Winnall, Abbots Barton, Badger Farm etc etc etc so where would we all be living now. Like it or not the population is growing all the time and we all have a write to live where we were born.

Yes but we cannot continue building on good quality farmland in an area where the transport infrastructure is inadequate and where most of the occupants will commute to work elsewhere. 300 homes are already planned for the city centre in the Silver Hill development; why rush to concrete over these green fields as well to satisfy some government prediction of housing demand which may well be untrue

err.YES..I would if that was where I could afford a house! (and have seriously considered it)
If you think these properties will be going to local people - well I doubt it - they'll be well out of their price range.
I had to move away from where I was born and bred because I was PRICED out and YES I DID have to find a new job and new friends.
I expect there's plenty of brown field sites available if they looked hard enough - but there wouldn't be such big fat profits available.

But on second thoughts, maybe it would have been better not to build Highcliff and Winnall...

The definition of greenfield is somewhat misleading when applied to farmland. The land is ploughed up every year completely changing the natural resources - particularly wildlife habitats. I would rather see development on agricultural fields than on derelict brownfield sites where nature has moved in. There is remnant wildlife habitat at Barton Farm - hedgerows, ditches etc but the majority of the site as far as I can see lacks any real habitat which is worth protecting.

Its a wedge of farmland which would be ideally suited to a carefully planned development which aims to enhance biodiversity and wildlife habitats - though the planning system may not provide the mechanism for ecologically friendly design in the development.

Green and brown roofs, waste water recycling, Sustainable drainage systems or SUDS, alternative energy - solar, wind etc, energy efficiency should be at the core of the design.

People who complain about this development live in houses which were built on similar land around the rest of Winchester.

The use of Barton Farm as a dog emptying service is hardly a reason to refuse a sensitively designed development on the site.
