'Overwhelming need' for development, says latest report

Barton Farm Barton Farm

Barton Farm must be built to tackle the chronic problem of housing need in Winchester, according to a new report commissioned by developer Cala Homes.

The study by Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners says there is an overwhelming need for the 2,000 homes.

Cala has submitted the report to the city council’s Blueprint initiative, a public consultation on the future of Winchester until 2026, which ends this month.

Cala also commissioned a straw poll that showed support for more housing in the city.

The survey of 100 people in the city centre revealed 67 per cent wanted more housing; 75 per cent thought Winchester was too expensive to live in; and 86 per cent agreed that they knew people who could not afford to live in Winchester.

A city council spokesman said of the report: “It is very useful and will form part of our work in drawing up the Blueprint.”

Gavin Blackman, of the Save Barton Farm Group, questioned whether the statistical basis of the report might be “spurious”.

Steve Brine, Winchester MP, is steadfastly against the development, labelling the scheme “a gross over-development of the city”, and arguing that Cala has no local support.

“They have done nothing to ingratiate themselves. Their attitude is ‘we own the land, we will do what we want.”

NO, stop immigration, send those back to the countries they came from that shouldnt be here. Stop council families on benefits from have any children. This is not a solution, what shall we do just keep on building until there's no green left?

Firms like Cala are not interested in local people and what they stand for. They are in just to make money for their shareholders. These homes will not be for local people who cannot afford them, but as second homes for people living in London. The local infrastructure is not geared up to take so many extra people. It is just pandering to the likes of people with more money than they know what to do with it.

If the immigrants are sent back, and all the Brits are sent back from various countries around the world in which they have settled, I think that there would be an even bigger housing shortage.
I wonder what the racist bigots would complain about then.

rubbish - since 1997 more people have come to this island than left it by 1-4. The population was small back in the 1940's so people could afford to move around and "work". Were full. Also agree with the point on 2nd homes too.

I'm very happy to see this report, I have always believed that there is more call for housing in Winchester than the vocal would have us believe. Without it I believe that Winchester as community will stagnate as people choose to live and shop somewhere more affordable.

If they get the go ahead then they'll just build what always gets built in Hampshire, ie 4-5 bedroom "family" houses that only those on higher rate tax salaries & family tax credits (or some of the cash-in-hand non-income-disclosin
g self employed trades!) can afford, with the absolute minimum "affordable" housing. Just look at Whiteley and Knowle Village!

Calling a weighty and clearly very well-produced document like this 'spurious' simply indicates that Gavin Blackman hasn't even read the damned thing. Unfortunately this is about the level of constructive engagement one expects from lobelia-growing nimbyistic home counties malcontents with nothing better to do than set up what they laughably call 'action groups'.

This is a brilliant and authoritative report, and I doubt a single one of you has read further than the executive summary.

Malcolm Tent from London, you didn’t write the damned thing did you? Not everyone wants to live in a place like London, some choose to live in a less developed environment with a bit of green space and caring for wildlife. Well we did until the likes of greedy developers starting to try and run the Country, being able to afford to keep going to the High Court to challenge the Council’s decisions. Development has ruined the character of Chilbolton Avenue and other areas within Winchester, it is time to put a stop to it. People are entitled to their opinion and voice them in anyway they can, hence the need to set up ‘laughable action groups’ against faceless Londoners. 100 people out of a population in the Winchester district of approx 109,000, call that a survey! Don’t think you can put too much credibility on the results of it or probably the content within the weighty document, may be good for bedtime reading if you are an insomniac. If you can’t afford to live in Winchester then don’t, the day people start to realise you can’t have everything if you can’t afford it will be the day the Country is a better place. Stick to commenting on where you live Malcolm Tent.

This article highlights the 'Overwhelming need' for greedy Cala Homes to make money for the shareholders and directors while decimating a green field.
However, as I can never recall an incident where the voice of the people was actually heard and taken notice of, Barton Farm will be built. Enjoy!
