Government reject plan for Barton Farm

2,000 homes plan for beauty spot scrapped 2,000 homes plan for beauty spot scrapped

CONTROVERSIAL plans to build 2,000 homes at a Hampshire beauty spot were set to be rejected today.

The Daily Echo has learned that the Government will announce that it is turning down proposals for the housing development at Barton Farm on the edge of Winchester.

Anti-development campaigners were jubilant and Winchester MP Steve Brine today described the decision as a “victory for common sense”.

But one city councillor said the ruling was “an absolute disaster” for the city due to its chronic shortfall in social housing.

This is great news, although it would not surprise me if Cala Homes appeal again. 2000 homes would have been unworkable, Winchester is busy enough as it is!

Since when did Cala Homes 'do' social housing on a scale that would fulfil Winchster City Council's requirements?

Re-submit with a revised figure of 1,950 homes and win.
.
Winchester needs this development.

A win for 'Have's' and the 'Have nots' lose out.

Collins English Dictionary:

conservative adj 1. favouring the preservation of established customs and values, and opposing change.

Did anyone really expect Winchester City Council to support affordable housing?

Social Housing is not the issue here, the 4000 extra cars on Winchester's already overcrowded streets is.

Perhaps the good people of Winchester would prefer a travellers site instead?

Perhaps the developers should suggest that and then I'm sure 2,000 new homes to help those less fortunate suddenly wouldn't seem quite so nasty and wouldn't ruin their views too much.

It's all very well, but where are Cala going to try for next?

Look at the picture on the article - what do most have in common?

Winchester needs housing for the younger generation or they'll leave in droves.

Hmm, that would be a bit like the way you oppose absolutely any change to public sector working practice, numbers, conditions or pay then. You must be a conservative too Linesman.

Yes, that's very obvious & doesn't take a comedy genius to work that one out.

No wonder Winchester has a fuddy duddy NIMBY reputation.

We shouldnt be building affordable homes in the countryside or on the green belt or anywhere that may be considered a beauty spot.
.
Regenerate old council estates. Those houses are massive. Knock them down and build 4 houses in it's place.
.
Take back areas that have been taken over by immigrants, regenerate these homes and give back to young British Workers as starter homes.
.
Leave the countryside to people that have earned to live there.

come off it...those thousands of homes were never going to be 'affordable'. This is Winchester we are talking about - you pay for the post code!! What is needed is local authority housing owned and maintained by the council with reasonable rent. Build 500 family sized council houses and give families somewhere decent to live - the proviso being that you have a job and are not living off the state but cannot afford a mortgage.

Your right, I do need a bigger abode & I was hoping that I would have a chance of going for one of these if built.

Typical NIBYS. Don't build a house near me, can't have a wind farm , it will spoil the view , don't open a Witherspoon near me, (there for common folk). Only new cars none of those 10 year old cars we see around!! put all the poor people in council flats ,( but not in the rich city of Winchester!!) . I'm all right why should I care about anyone else.
Just about sums up what is the matter with England to-day.

I have lived in Winchester since 1978 and still live there. When I first arrived there was "social" housing in Stanmore, Weeke, Winnal, Highcliffe, Fulflood; military housing in Harestock and prison officers in Fulflood. Now much of this housing has been sold to its occupants and onto property speculators who rent the houses "multiple occupancy" to students etc. Winchester University should be responsible for housing "its students"; returning many family homes to the rented market as "social" housing should be the council's responsibility. At least there won't be 4000 cars to accommodate on Winchester's crowded roads until Cala appeal (as they definitely will) or the council's LDF (which plays right into their grubby mitts) is published!

I walk my dog on Barton Farm every day and it's beautiful, common sense prevails on this decision I think.

Let's face it, if you can't afford to live in Winchester then find somewhere you can afford!

What a wholey disgusting comment, and i suspect the attitude of many wealthy property owners in Winchester. So what you are saying is that everyone who serves you in a shop, cleans your floors, paints you house, helps your loved ones to get better in hospital should do so but not be able to live near you? Bring them in by the bus load in the morning and ship them out in the evening and lock the gates behind them?

The building on greenbelt land is a red hearing when; you have so many people living on their own in houses big enough for a family, when speculators hold on to vacant land to squeeze out every drop of profit and the buy to let mob keeping your averge wage earner in their thrall.

What we need in this country is a LAND VALUE TAX, http://en.wikipedia.
org/wiki/Land_value_
tax
A tax that cant be dodged! That will stop speculators keeping land and property dorment to artificially push up prices. A tax on wealth rather than toil, so that what i earn i keep and spend where i wish.

That is exactly the attitude that holds Winchester back & reinforces peoples attitudes towards the city.

Somewhere for your dog to carp or affordable social housing? Personally, I think I know which one I'd prefer.
