We'll help you beat recession, pledges Gordon Brown

THE Prime Minister has pledged to fight global trade barriers to make sure Southampton beats the recession.

He said the city, as a “gateway to the world”, was well placed to emerge from the downturn. He insisted the Government was doing all it could to help struggling residents and businesses. In an interview with the Daily Echo during yesterday’s Cabinet “away day” in Southampton Gordon Brown hit back at accusations the city was not getting a fair deal from central Government.

He said: “I was determined to come to Southampton today to say not just to the people of Southampton but the whole region that we are doing everything we can to help people with their jobs, to help people with mortgages, and to help small business and big business in the area.”

He said the region was caught in a world downturn, but the Government was offering “real help” for mortgages, for training and for businesses “right across the board”.

“Unlike previous downturns, we are doing everything we can to help people and we will continue to look at what more we can do,” he said.

Mr Brown claimed Southampton and the region was “crucial to the country”.

Asked specifically what the Government was doing to help the city, which has been hit by a wave of job cuts, notably at Ford and the docks as demand for goods slumps, Mr Brown said he was determined to keep the country open for business and prevent other countries putting up “protectionist” barriers to trade.

He said: “This is the gateway to the world and everybody knows that this is one of the most important parts of the economy, because people will come here and goods come through this port and we are determined that we don’t allow world trade to fall and falter. Protectionism that would mean less goods coming into the port.”

He added: “The more we can have an open trading economy the more Southampton can get the benefits of trade and the investments we are making in Southampton and the companies are making in Southampton can bear fruit. In the world of the future there is going to be so much mobility of companies and of people travelling, students coming to our country, and Southampton has got a great future ahead of it. We’ve got to get through these tough items to make sure that great future can be realised.”

Asked to reassure the city over 500 job losses at Ford Mr Brown pointed to pledges made by the company that it had a future in Southampton and that it was planning new models.

He added the Government had created a facility with the Bank of England and other facilities to provide “working capital” to enable companies having difficulties with the banks to get support.

Mr Brown said ministers had used the Cabinet meeting to discuss the measures needed to ensure Britain emerges from the downturn equipped to take advantage of the opportunities of the future.

Cabinet discussed the need to promote the low-carbon technology and digital infrastructure of the future, and to maintain investment in education and training through the downturn, he said.

l Mr Brown was able to spotlight the “real help now” booklet and website realhelpnow.gov.uk.

They're only worried about two people who will be losing their jobs in Southampton very soon.
Alan Whitehead and John Denham.

How can businesses start to beat the recession when the major banks that have been bailed out wont lend 10% of a business' available capital?

Vince Cable is a gifted orator, Nick Clegg seems a good guy BUT as a party they lack the gravitas of the Tories. Big hitters like William Hague and Ken Clarke are knocking Labour to pieces. I don't see the likes of Gidley, Oaten or Huhne being up to the job of government.

I agree Saint, I feel a calming effect come upon me that vince cable is helping enormously in putting Lib Dems on the map. He should be tried and tested as a Cabinet Member. Unfortunately, it would appear the Cons and Lib Dems did not do well in OUR council - but I would be very interested how much Government have a hold on outposts. I also agree, because I am in Mrs. Gidley's area, who has moved mountains in respect of her constituancy Romsey. Mind you, as with everything, its salt and vinigar to others. However, our MPs can only go so far because I do wonder about adhering to dictatorship, and I think this is the dangerous point in our history.

Alan Whitehead and John Denham have been excellent MPs for Southampton. People thinking of returning to the Tories must have forgotten what it was like in the last recession with "unemployment being a price worth paying" and "if it isn't hurting it isn't working" being just two of the phrases coined by that government. Not to mention interest rates of 15% and repossessions running out of control.

Just look at how the two local Tory candidates - Roy Smith and Jeremy Moulton - have behaved since the Tories won the council. They've closed homes for elderly people, they've racheted up parking charges (which they said they'd never do), hugely increased cremation charges prior to privatisation and presided over cuts to bus services that make getting around the city really hard without a car. And this is just a start. Just think what it would be like if those two got anywhere near government.

Tom Bargate
Remembering the last recession as a reason not to return to the Tories is like remembering the winter of discontent not to keep Labour - past history doesn't count for much in politics; times change, as do the parties and their polices, & probably none so much as new labour did to shed it's old image.
Not that I'm saying the Tories would be any better - IMO they're all pretty clueless as to how to handle the recession.

If Britain was a person, it would be suffering the advanced stages of senile dementia. What chance have we got in getting out of the two trillion pound national deficit that we have? We've lost our manufacturing that helped to build this country into the force that it was and a flying visit from our elected representatives will do absolutely nothing to help our confidence. We may as well shut up shop for good.

They're the sort of people who'd volunteer to be on the social committee at work, or campaign for form captain at school - they may think that it makes them popular, but really they're just a bunch of nobheads.

Well, it is slightly different in that Major won the 1992 election and was therefore elected by the country, albeit not straight away. Can't see Brown managing that.

Oh dear Condor Man if i had a guess i would say that you were a devout miguided and misinformed Tory with a very selective memory. Major took this Country absolutely NOWHERE and Brown did not destroy the strong economy.
Many people and Companies have flourished under Labour rule unlike the Tory regime that destroyed families and Communities throughout the UK.
This recession in case you have not noticed is Worldwide and we are better placed to recover from it than many others.

major did nothing, he just rode the recession out, our economy was a shables, he left us with a very high unemployment, and a very big dept thats why we still owe alot, the torys bankrupt this country just for there own personal gains, our imports was still greater than our exports from the mid 1980's, our economy was in the red again from the 80's
what people dont remember or forgot when the torys took over power in 1979. our exports was greater than our imports, unemployment was just below 1 million (counting every one that was employable age) our economy was in the black, and that our world war 2 dept to the usa was nearly paid up owning them about 1.2 million $ this never got cleared till the labour party returned back in power

I think the BNP would disagree with you there Southy and you might find a lot of their support is from "ordinary" folk, not necessarily facists.
I'm not a supporter of either, but I'd expect their influence will grow, fueled by the current climate, lack of political choice, and fear of foreign workers as demonstrated by the recent strikes.

My point is that you cannot label all BNP's supporters as facists, I don't doubt there are extremes in the same way there are everywhere, but a lot of ordinary people agree with their policies and for the reason I mentioned I suspect support will grow, especially as they distance themselves more and more from the N/Front.

We have to get this idea that we are an Empire still, we are just a small island off the coast of Europe if we pull out, how is that going to help the nation. I have never got my head arount this pull out of the EU and stand on our own against the world stuff, it makes absolutely not financial sense at all and is all fueled by the "straight Sausage" reporting of the tabloid press.
