The FA cup-winning manager is the latest big name to support the UK Cruise Port Alliance petition demanding the Government stops the Merseysiders from muscling in on the turnaround cruise business.

Together with Saints legend Francis Benali and comedian and Saints fan Mike Osman, Lawrie urged the club’s army of supporters to add their names to the fast-growing petition.

It is estimated Liverpool’s publicly funded terminal could strip £80m from the economies of rival UK ports in its first year.

Already eclipsing Liverpool’s 2,500-strong petition in support of its bid to use its £20m taxpayer- funded terminal to compete with privately funded ports, at least 5,000 local people have signed either online or paper versions.

Lawrie said: “Liverpool are flying in the football and they should be content with that.

This campaign gets my full support.”

The petition was sparked by the proposal for a change to the funding conditions of the City of Liverpool Cruise Terminal to allow turnaround cruises. Just 18 months after the idea was rejected by the previous Government and a year after the coalition took power, the proposal is again out for public consultation.
