Red Arrows display cancelled Red Arrows display cancelled

A spectacular fly past by the Red Arrows in Southampton has been cancelled due to dismal weather conditions.

The iconic aircraft were due to roar across the skies over Southampton's Mayflower Park at 6.20pm for the first time ever today bringing to a climax a showcase day of Jubilee celebrations in the city.

But with rain still lashing down and grey skies overhead, organisers have announced with just an hour to go they will not fly.

Diamond Jubilee - Earlier Stories

Earlier this afternoon they said a decision would be made at around 4.30pm but they had been holding out hope this afternoon hoping for a turn in the conditions.

The Red Arrows were scheduled to power in to view and perform one of their famous displays above Cunard's Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria which are all docked in the city.

The spectacular sight would have been a city first and was due to be celebrated with a jaw-dropping display of fireworks and special effects shortly after.

Although i was looking forward to seeing this magnificent spectacle again, i would rather it was cancelled in these conditions than seeing a tragic accident caused by visibility problems just for the entertainment of a handful of drunks.

Exactly, if only we spent as much time and money celebrating the fantastic effort and sacrifices that these heroic people made for the freedom of this country, then all would appear fair. I do not begrudge these celebrations but feel that the real heros are too readily forgotten. The majority of youngsters will return to school/work/universi
ty and not even remember the sacrifices made by ordinary people in June 1944. Their history lessons of this period consists only of the Auswitz camps etc. Everything else no longer exists and will slowly evaporate as time passes and the genuine heroes pass on. Somethiing of this grand jubilee scale should be organised to celebrate their real contribution before it is too late. We should NEVER forget the true heroes.

Brilliant post, and we must not forget that these people died for their King and Country, the best things about wars is the end of them. We have seen some very good Celebration of D-Day in the past, but people tend to quickly forget the sacrifices made, unless they are reminded, there will be time to remind people in 2014, the 70th Anniversary.

Fantastic idea, let's start a campaign for 2014 and celebrate the true sacrifices and heroics of the 'normal man'. Sadly, as with the 50th celebrations, veterans who wanted to travel to Normandy for one last visit, found that their pension funds would not stretch that far and, without any outside financial assistance, had to abort any visit. In 1944 the government, obviously, paid for the visit so in 2014 the government should be honour bound to pay for any veteran to travel free of charge to visit the scenes of their heroism and to visit the graves of their fallen friends and collegues. We owe so much to these people and this is the very least we should do before it is too late. Better still, make the EU pay for it, then perhaps the memories of these heroics and scarifices would be remembered by those who now deliberately block the memory out.

Having just returned from mayflower i suggest you go there and see for yourself. As we all know there is good and bad in every aspect of life, we should not be tarring all youngsters just because there are some bad eggs amongst them. Education is the best way to get things right, some people will never learn. As older people, we should be setting a good example, in some walks of life that simply won't happen no matter how much we preach good.

I've got a funny feeling that the incident in June 1944 was not performed just for the entertainment of a handful of drunken students. Please forgive me if i'm wrong though.
Forgiven, no it was a bit more serious than that, "lest we forget", 6th of June tomorrow, time to remember the fallen who gave their lives to save ours.

What have we all got to do to thwart this plague? You must have the perfect solution in mind, what is it?
yup a people revolution peaceful one if possable
We need a new leader are you up for it, or can you suggest someone we can trust and follow, knowing that they won't be corrupted on the way to the top?
You could trust me but for one thing i not interested being a leader i would prefere to at the back and keep an eye on those in front and let them know when they step out of line.
Plus if things are done right you would not get one person leading you have a group leading so one single person gets to much power

OK with that, the problem with Committees at the top, is that they never agree on anything as they all have their own agendas and you end up with a total lash up. Every Team needs a Captain to keep order, the Captain has to have the respect of all of the Committee, it only takes one rebel, and your ideal solution floats down the river. Do you regard yourself as a member of the proletariat in this 21st Century?

Cunard and it's ilk have NO thought for the residents. I bet some of the crew onboard went to that non-university to obtain their degrees in Maritime navigation, bloody unwashed ravers, the lot of 'em.

Hummm my reply post has gone, think I might of hit on to a real good solution Osprey.
It must off been a good reply for some one to take the time and trouble of getting it removed.
Mine you I all ready know that this solution do work.

Co-ops very true ones or committees do work Osprey if they are set up right, you have some one at the top but he do not have any more power than the rest of them, he just there to keep things in order, just like in the same way the Speaker of the House of Commons do, and it should apply in governemt with the Prime Minister, the PM should never be allowed to dictate to the Cabinet in what they got to do, this is what Thatcher did to her Cabinet ordered them.
