Exercise Control
CALLING THE SHOTS: 20th Armoured Brigade's operations officer Captain Rob Singleton
CALLING THE SHOTS: 20th Armoured Brigade's operations officer Captain Rob Singleton

Exercise Control - or Excon as it is known - is the hub of everything that is happening to 1PWRR out on the prairie.

Inside more than 25 senior officers are directing the training - and hatching a plan of how battle will be conducted.

This time, because it is not for real, they have the luxury of knowing where the enemy are and what they are planning.

They are joined by computer wizards, who work for Qinetiq in Farnborough, who are using the latest computer software to give a bird's-eye view of the battlefield using simulated aircraft that are available to go into the skies during real operations. Even though no aircraft are being used in this "fake" battle, the guys on the ground can find themselves under aerial strike.

The room, kitted out with rows of computers and army radios, is filled with detailed maps of the area and planning boards and is manned 24 hours.
