Hampshire's fluoride debate

Hampshire campaigners say adding chemical is 'illegal'

CAMPAIGNERS have lodged a new bid to have fluoride banned from Southampton’s tap water because it is not licensed as a medicine.

Calls have been made for the body responsible for regulating health products to be censured for allegedly breaking the law by not testing the chemicals involved for safety.

Hampshire MEP Caroline Lucas and New Forest East MP Julian Lewis have both written to the parliamentary and health service ombudsman demanding an investigation.

If they succeed, it could mean fluoridation has to be halted across the country while the chemicals involved are thoroughly tested.

The move comes after the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) rejected calls from campaign group Hampshire Against Fluoridation (HAF) to examine whether fluoride needs to be treated in the same way as other medicines.

It believes drinking water is covered by different legislation and is not within its remit.

But the politicians have now urged the ombudsman to step in and order the body to ban fluoridation.

Medicinal European law says any substance “presented as having properties for treating or preventing disease” must be viewed as a medicinal product.

In February, South Central Strategic Health Authority backed plans to add fluoride to the water supplies of nearly 200,000 people living in parts of Southampton, Eastleigh, Totton, Netley and Rownhams.

Speaking ahead of the 2008 public consultation, the city’s director of public health, Andrew Mortimore said he was backing fluoride because it would cut tooth decay.

HAF chairman John Spottiswoode says because health bosses argued fluoridation is needed to improve dental health, they have admitted it is being used as a medicine.

Mr Spottiswoode says it is immoral and illegal to medicate anyone without consent.

He said: “We want the MHRA to obey EU and UK legislation, enforce testing to medicinal standards, plus licensing, of water fluoridation chemicals.

Until that is done all fluoridation in the UK should cease.”

An MHRA spokeswoman said the organisation was confident of its decision.

“The MHRA considers that neither the fluoride added to drinking water nor the resulting fluoridated water is a medicinal product,” she said.

“Claims made for non-medicinal products fall outside the MHRA’s jurisdiction.”

tooth decay can be prevented by proper dental care. It's not expensive to buy a toothbrush and toothpaste.

I wrote on there (although using a different handle) when this poisoning plan was first mooted that there would be many legal attempts to get this mass medication stopped.

The only sad thing is that these pen pushers are being paid to peddle their poisoning plans.

i been doing some research on this, like trying to find out what type and where is this fluoride is coming from. having no luck so far. the sha refuses to answer this question.
i even contacted a friend at the glaxo plant in stevenage, and got mail back saying its not that plant supplying this chemical and he had contacted others drug manufacturer's refinerys and none of them have been contacted about supply fluoride to be place in drinking water, what he said at the end of the mail was fear the worse to be on the safe side, and treat it has industrial waste fluoride.

Many years ago I read a book about Australia, one book horrified me because it was the introduction of none-indigenous 'animals' - the like of which descimated the indigenous animal kingdom and now, amongst many problems have huge toads gnawing their way through their country. NOW, as small as a poison, fluoride, into our water, how on earth do we fight these ill advised insertions. Australia has a gynormous problem - not nessarily our fault - BUT please, do not mishandle our ecology.

Floride It can also cause cellular dysfunction and damage hormone receptors and other regulatory sites if it makes its way into cell membranes. Of particular importance with regards to autism and other behavioural disorders is the news that fluoride damages enzymes within the brain and lowers IQ's

So as our schools are under perfoming it begs to question if floride isn't already in our water system. Or could it be that our heads of local education are drinking too much bottled water with added floride at their desks. It may also be down to just brushing their teeth to much for the publicity photo's

It is unlikely that anyone will be able to trace the supplier of the chemical here as I heard that we shall be using up waste chemical from abroad that would otherwise cost that country a fortune to get rid of.
It was somewhere in Europe but not eastern Europe, maybe Holland or Belgium ?

Where is your scientific evidence that fluoride causes this?? absolute hogwash! honestly, if you're going to publish this stuff publish your sources. Cue no doubt the American scaremongering that we usually get in these columns. I admire the people who are fighting against this, and we do have to listen but DON'T scaremonger, FACTS and scientific evidence are needed not a load of old hearsay !

There have been shortages of the fluoridation product in the USA with some cities paying many times over the going rate and the price has increased many times to all in the last 5 years. Phosphate production has dropped drasticily from record highs 3 or 4 years ago in Florida where most of US phosphate is produced in west central Florida. Have many family in the heart of the beast living in old reclaimed mine areas also. This is a huge area of land with much laid barren waste and never reclaimed with mega huge radioactive piles of waste phospho gypsum to radioactive for drywall or roadbed base or even soil amendment too frequently. They actually allow this to sweeten the soil of some food crops, Not wise.
There is almost no monitoring of natural radiation byproducts which can be as deadly as radium scale in large quanties from plant pipes. This extreme radioactive waste is just buried unmentioned in the low radioactive mountains of waste. Most have huge cooling ponds on top with billions of gallons of cooling toxins. The piles also have more billions of gallons of very radioactive fluoride rich water saturating the piles. The 2004 hurricanes with 3 saw ponds being dumped by ship at sea to avoid overflowing. One pile fell into a sinkhole giving our Florida limestone groundwater a dose of forever toxins. Strip mining leaves lots of radioactive wastes and that 4% fluoride is one of the worst.
The EPA required in 1970 not to kill cattle ,crops etc anymore and smokestack scrubbers were installed. No testing ever has been done for choronic safety or benefit of this toxic soup. H2SiF6 is about 24% fluoride give or take some and lots of contaminates many radioactive as the mines also did produce uranium from 7 recovery plants until the last closed in 1998 per EPA mining records. The huge tonnage of uranium yellowcake is now just left in products and waste piles unmentioned to the public. In the glory days this semisecret operation produced up to 75% of all US uranium needs for nukes and reactors. Africa sold it cheaper and the recovery units closed. The uranium is just not mentioned or all the decay products as it is bad PR. Most in Florida have no idea they might be standing or sleeping on top of a old uranium/phosphate mine.
AWWA b703-06 is the standard NSF is the non government testing agency and must test one batch a year from each facility that it fits specifications. The content varies with every batch and by how the sample is drawn as the most toxic sludge and radioactive lies on the bottom of the waste. They are supposed to stir or roll the barrel before testing. No cities test the product except for fluoride content as none want to document the wide range of deadly contaminates they add to the water.
Even the EPA had refused to admit until 1998 the product had radioactivity in it. Lousiana actually regulates the radioactive products but Florida ignores it all hoping no one notices it poisioning our groundwater.
Fluoridation is just a method of dilution of the toxic effects around the world.
The CDC has admitted a shortage of product recently and Kip Dushawn CDC in 2007 admitted most of the dry form is from China now.Na2SiF6.
Get the b703-06 page 12 and it shows a full page of typical contaminates ,most radioactive.
It should be very easy to get the source of the chemicals as all water plants know who it comes from. Ask the manager first. Second go to accounting and then ask for the public record of the last shipment. They have all the costs and who shipped for the year. But the supplier will usually tell nothing except they pass NSF testing. This means next to nothing really because it is not your batch ever. Get a real test of your product and the water plant can do that but will never.
Our EPA science unions are fighting management and congress to halt fluoridation .This started in 1985 with one headquarters union who filed a lawsuit in 1986 which the federal courts refused to hear. By 2000 in fluoridation congressional hearings they asked congress to halt fluoridation until the safety and benefit research was done. This has not happened and warning promised of the long list of at risk susceptable people in the 1993 never happened as promised. In 2005 11 EPA unions asked congress to halt fluoridation. In 2008 it was 19 with 10,000 professions strong but no response yet. Political power and money lobby and science takes a back seat in the bus. Poor blacks were proven damaged by fluoride double of whites from the very first government experment. Actually 2.3 times more and the CDC still refuses to warn even after ethics charges in 2007. The CDC MMWR in 2005 and 2007 still prove this double damage for blacks but now it is double the super ugly moderate and severe dental fluorisis which the CDC still claims can not happen from magical 1ppm safe water. Augusta Ga in 1992 had 80% with dental fluorosis but a shocking 14% with moderate and severe . Very possible at their1ppm for these black kids.
Management of the health services are professional con men of the very worst type. Nearly impossible to get a straight answer ever. Real debates are impossible for the dishonest. They just repeat simple claims no matter how false. Most dentists cover their backs.

I have been speaking out a city commission meetings for almost 5 years now. Sitting down with the many manages was almost comical as they told me they would answer no questions but give me a written response later. It ended up months later and was just cut and paste CDC and health department statements with no answers to my questions. Most are terrified to put their job at risk by being honest on anything fluoride.
I almost never get any response from health departments on questions except cut and paste standard form statements. Even if they promise to answer questions it is rare. Usually it is to tell me to ask someone else who has that data.
I was banned from ever speaking on the topic in my city for 3 months until they were mocked in the paper to first amendment violations. I have discovered in secret files were made and given to dentists and city managers to fight my actions. It was a CD of my first 13 times speaking to my city and a transcript to go along. I only discovered this months later in a public records search in another city. I thanked my Mayor Dentist for taking the first step to educate dentists of the risks of fluoridation. This could assist in future litigation of course as they can not claim they were unaware now.
This year My dentist Mayor asked the health department to organize a response and how to rebut my science. This was at taxpayers expense and I was first told I had no right to any of the information as no records existed. Not very honest. I asked for the agenda which they did admit existed and then I asked for the power points and hand outs of the state ADA and health department who presented. I did not get a single word of their plans against me as the agenda mentioned. They also said no record existed of who attended dentist or health department. No recording, transcript, minutes or anything which is all public record. But at first I was told nothing was public record of the meeting. I ended up getting nothing I cared about as the power points are pure drivel and never about peer reviewed science. Policy rules with endorsements and tons of money and government paid to deceive and sell the public simplistic talking points. So very unprofessional. Standard operating procedure in government health.

the usa has a stock pile of fluoride there is 1000's of tons produce has a side product waste from steel foundrys, let alone what get produce when smelting other types of metals, you get fluoride produce in most coal refining then there oil refining.
like here in the uk tons go to glaxo for refining to go in to toothpaste, that comes from a waste product from refinerys when cracking crude oil. its a natural by-product

I agree dozens of industries produce toxic waste products and fluoride based acids are used in so much industrial. There are also many newer compounds used in electronics like flat screen production and of course premium gas cracking and different non stick and fire suppression systems. Bricks and glass production use huge amounts and concrete also for curing compounds. The aluminum industry was the major polluter with Andrew Mellon creating their fake data when he was in charge of the health department for ten years. Vats of chryolite are used to refine aluminum and about 5000 pounds of fluoride went up the chimney each batch. Many lawsuits resulted and were settled out of court.
US government agencies did admit airborne fluorides between 1957-1968 caused more lawsuit damage then all of the other 20 top contaminates combined. Many arount the smelting of iron, and zinc coating. Tempature inversion caused 19 deaths in Denora with those dying fluoride toxic but denied as no cause. The first few years of fluoridation Alcoa Aluminum sold its waste sodium fluoride as rat poison and insecticide only used a small amount of this waste. That was Andrew Mellons company and the Mellon institude did much of the research claiming safety and benefit.Severe conflict of interest. In the US almost all fluoridation(93%) uses H2SiF6 from the phosphate industry smokestack scrubbers with most in Florida in the US. They are found around the world. China is now a big exporter also said our CDC in 2007. AWWA b703-06 is the standard with page 12 a specification sheet sample but NSF a private company actually does the quality control testing. One test required a year to not exceed max of 10% of arsenic level for final dilution. Called the MAL and it was a concern when the allowed levels for arsenic dropped from 50ppb to 10ppb. Some wanted it 5 and lower like 3 which would have rejected batches as too arsenic toxic. H2SiF6 is the primary source of arsenic and lead in most US cities water. Maas 2007 Coplan 2007 show the bench testing data of lead leachibng with much higher levels with chloramines the CDC now push all cities to use. Washington DC had a lead disaster from 2000-2004 from this toxic combination and hid the problem for almost 3 full years. Levels were up to 48,000ppb with often hundreds and even thousnds of times over the legal limit. The 15ppb limit they ignored. It was a massive cover up by the Feds and in 2003 they gave out free water and filters to 25,000 homes and it was front page for 30 days. They only blamed lead pipes but the 100,000 homes with no lead pipes had just as much lead in the water unmentioned to them. Orthophosphate corrosion control got it down. They had to fake school safety tests with high pressure flushes then tested for lead. Very dishonest but standard in government cover ups.
