SOB petition council against demolition

CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save their village pub from demolition handed in a petition of more than 300 names to Mid Devon District Council.

The Save Our Barge action group was formed in Halberton after an application to the planning authority revealed plans to tear down The Barge in favour of six new homes.

Last week the Star reported that MP Neil Parish had added his name to a 306-strong petition against Enlighten Inns’ planning application.

SOB spokesman Brian Lane Smith told the Star that the petition has now been handed into Mid Devon District Council, which will soon be considering the application.

The petition urged the council to reject the proposals, which they claim would “result in the total loss of the only public house in the village with the resulting damage to the sustainability of the community, provision of local facilities, quality of life, loss of employment and irreparable damage to our community as well as the loss of an important historical building in a conservation area”.
