Kohli should spend rest of life behind bars

Trevor and Hilary Foster with daughter Sarah outside Winchester Crown Court today. Trevor and Hilary Foster with daughter Sarah outside Winchester Crown Court today.

The killer of Southampton student Hannah Foster should never be freed from prison, her parents claimed last night

The 41-year-old was yeaterday jailed for a minimum of 24 years for the murder of 17-year-old Hannah and today spends the first full day of that sentence behind bars.

But Hannah's parents Hannah and Hilary say that's not enough and believe Kohli should spend the rest of his life locked up.

Speaking after the six week trial at Winchester Crown Court Trevor said: “We have done everything we can in pursuit of justice for Hannah.

"However, we can not accept and never will be able to accept, how a complete stranger can abduct, rape and murder your teenager daughter, still a child in the eyes of the law, and yet not end his days in prison.

Watch Trevor Foster's statement on Kohli's jail sentence

“Kohli will in all probability walk out of jail after serving his recommended minimum sentence and resume his life in the outside world. This man callously deprived Hannah of her primary human right, the right to life.

“This sentence gives him the right to a second chance at life, a second chance he never gave Hannah. To see Kohli’s life valued in this way when he showed such utter disregard for Hannah’s is hurtful beyond measure. The punishment should fit the crime. In this case it certainly did not.”

It is impossible to imagine the grief that this family has gone through. However the time the legal process has taken has additionally blighted their lives.

Some would say you can't put a price on justice, but we have to.
At some point we must accept that the system is broken and needs a radical overhaul.

our sympathy goes to all of Hannah's family

as for Kohli he should be sent to the hell of the Indian prisons they could get rid of him for good

I'm sure Mr Kohli will experience 'real' justice when he meets his cell mates over the next few weeks. 24 years of that will be ample punishment.

SAd and tragic case for all concerned.
I believe in a life sentence being just that, but sadly it never is.
Much as I would like to see Kholi serve the 24 years(in absence of full life) I fear he will not.
Once the Human rights and appeals process etc gets going, I think he will have his sentence reduced.
Sad, but quite often happens.

the thing i don't like about our system is summed up on this page. The sick individual has confessed on tape to the abduction and killing of this poor girl and yet millions are spent putting it through the court process so that some clever book reading barrister can look at ways of reducing the charge or the unthinkable, getting him off.Personally in cases like this surely a life for a lfe should apply

I'm sure Hannah would be proud of her family's remarkable dignity throughout this whole episode. They never gave up on tracking that animal down and bringing him to justice. Credit to the Police and Interpol for making sure Kohli is behind bars where he belongs.

This scum not only murdered that young pretty girl but he also committed bigamy, he tried to set up mr Dennis and his brother, he tried to destroy mr dennis's marrage by claiming an affair. he also conned 16k out of this bloke. i think he should be sentenced for these crimes too.

In stronger language than I would have chosen, "localnews" has expressed the point well:

'...millions are spent putting it through the court process...'

I intend using the freedom of information act to try and find out how much this trial has actually cost.

There needs to be a root and branch reform of the criminal justice system to avoid repeating the kind of nonsense we have seen in this case.

What could be a more fitting legacy to Hannah Foster than to see money saved by this in future diverted to worthy hospital or school projects?

Full sympathy with Hannah's family and friends.

After lots of hard work by Hampshire Police, Indian Authorities, many members of the public and media (especially Echo) the right judgement has been delivered. But sadly courts can only deliver judgements, not justice.

Hannah went to college with the daughter of my friend. She was committed to study medicine and save lives. Sadly the evil animal Kohli robbed her of her own in most brutal manner. On top of that he tried not only to avoid arrest, he in fact went on ruthlessly lying and kept on prolonging the agony of Foster family. Everything this monster has done is disgraceful uncivilised behaviour.

Real justice would have been to put Kohli in a cage located somewhere in the city centre so that all the yobs could throw abuse and urinate at him for the rest of his life. Alternatively try reaching an agreement with Indian authorities to lock him in one of their prisons, because ours are two star hotels operating under the brand name of HMP.

We can only hope that his time inside is as miserable as can be. I agree that an Indian prison would be ideal. He liked India so much he went there to evade justice so maybe they should let him have his way and send him there. I doubt he would last the full term there!
To Hannahs family: I have been so impressed by the way you have dealt with this. As the mother of a daughter myself I don't know that I could have found the dignity that you have all held throughout. May she now rest in peace knowing that justice has been done, albeit a watered down version and I hope that you may now move on with your lives with the wonderful memories you have of your daughter and sister.

think the best thing here for him,is to send him to his home land to serve out his sentence,24 years in an indian jail is a lot worse than a uk jail.

Here he will no doubt be under supervision in his early days into his sentance.
And also segregated away from other prisoners for his own safety.
This monster does not deserve any prisoner rights but sadly he will get these.
I agree with the foster family statement HE SHOULD BE HELD INDEFINATLY UNTILL THE DAY HE LEAVES IN A BOX.......
PS does anyone know if the time he spent in custody in India counts?

india being a commonwealth country yes it will count.
personal my self,i would give 10 years to prove his innocence and any appeals then after 10 years hang him, just think 10 years of thinking and sweating knowing after 10 years the rope be there for him.10 years of torcher of the brain

Respect to Hannah's family and RIP Hannah. I fully agree with Hannah's family. In all murder cases, life in prison should mean the rest of their life - or where we now have extremely good forensic evidence, why not bring back the death penalty? Murder someone - you should go the same way.

I would have thought it would as his incarceration there was as a result of a request from out police relating to Hannah's murder. But in reports I've read they're indicating that the time deducted will not be that long. I'm sure I read 1 yr 303 days but he only arrived in UK in July last year, and had been in Indian custody since 2004 so I don't understand how that's being calculated. Certainly the Ds in charge of the investigation said something to the effect that Kohli would be considered for parole in 22 years which seems to agree with that figure.

It's shocking to know that there are other people like that out there. I can't imagine what Hannah's parents are going through.
Someone so sick in the head could of done this. It's actually disgusting what he's done. He should be shot.

I agree with you HANG THE MONSTER the time he spent in custody in India should NOT COUNT!
He also spent a considerable time in custody over here prior to his trial.
Im sure hes already spent at least 3yrs of his sentance already if not more.

This maggot will appeal so all concerned will have to put up with further legal wranglings for years to come, and unfortunatly his sentence has more chance of being reduced than of being increased, Kohli has all the time in the world to dream up more stories and reasons why he is the victim. Oh, how I would happily slip the noose around his neck and pull the lever.

For once I agree with Sharia Law in this case. We often have debates on the matter of Islam but they have got some things right

Our liberal leaders got rid of capital punishment back in the 60s and buried under European legislation too.

I pray that this creature's cell door is 'accidentally' left unlocked and eyes turned away.

I bet the scum will probably do a Dr Shipman or a Fred West thus saving a few million quid?

This local case has sent shockwaves around the world and I have avoided reading the court reports - it makes the skin crawl.

It humbles us all when looking how the family coped and made their incredible efforts to track the monster down. Great work on the Indian side too
