SOUTHAMPTON did its returning heroes proud as the city gave a patriotic welcome to the soldiers of 17 Port and Maritime Regiment.
Thousands of well-wishers waving Union flags lined the streets to show their support for the 350 Hampshire-based troops, many of whom have just completed a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.
The soldiers received the royal seal of approval as they were presented with service medals by Princess Anne, the regiment’s Colonel in Chief, at the Civic Centre after they had marched through the city from Mayflower Park following a sail past along Southampton Water.
