First Southampton reinstate city bus services

Traffic on the Itchen Bridge Traffic on the Itchen Bridge

ALL bus services in Southampton run by First bus were operating this afternoon following their suspension due to adverse weather conditions.

The heavy snow and icy conditions left transport buses at First with no option but to withdraw all their services from the city’s roads this morning.

However, after reviewing the situation buses were back on the routes by midday with all but a handful out of service.

Customers wanting specific information or updates are advised to contact the company.

A spokesman said that although the services were back on the roads passengers would be hit by delays owing to the weather and drivers taking extra care on icy routes.

The city is the worst hit with services in Portsmouth only suffering limited disruption. All main routes will be serviced while housing estate routes may suffer some cancellations.

Customers wishing to use bus services are advised to walk to the nearest main road.

In Dorset most services are operating normally. The company says it apologises for any disruption caused.

Those needing timetable information up specific advice on how to complete journeys are advised to call traveline on 0871 200 22 33 or check the First Group website (see related links).

'ALL bus services in Southampton run by first bus are being suspended today' - normal poor reporting by the Echo, and more First-bashing.

It is true that bus services stopped about 8:00am but by the time this article was posted (10:08am) First had started running buses again (although not a full timetable!).

I'm amazed they can run a service with such an elderly fleet of buses in the first place.

For years Southampton City have been trying to encourage people to 'Catch the bus'

Shame that the services evaporate whenever there is a drop of snow

This really is pretty poor reporting. They're running services now.

Incidentally, is London public transport running today, or has Boris Johnson managed to completely f* that up too?

Doesnt seem that way to me.

The drivers all did their best this morning, but were slipping on the hills - and as we know southampton is pretty full of hills, lol!

I think they're running a limited service now, could be cut tonight if it gets icy or snowy tonight I'd imagine.

As a driver for a bus company.Safety is priority and we were running all day except for for just over an hour in the morning due to the condition out there .certain areas were not safe to pass and some of you will be aware of the disruption we caused on Cobden ave nue yesterday !!!
We also had to deal with mindless idiots running in front of the buses and throwing stone laden snowballs at the windscreens !! All the drivers have done extremley well ...A bus Driver !

It's a great shame that the buses were removed, but this was done for safety to all concerned.

It's a great pity that the AMERICAN STYLE of get a small injury and sue the pants off who ever you can, has come to England. But this is now fact.

And it is for that reason, that most Companies operate silly and unworkable Health and safety policies.

10 yrs ago, someone have a minor knock with a bus, or slip getting on or off, they'd have said what the heck, it's been snowing only to be expected. That being the end of it.

But todays society, are all to different, a small knock with invisable damage to a car, becomes a £2000 insurance claim for Massive body damage. A passenger slip getting on or off, now run's into £1000's as they claim for lost time off work, with minor injuries inflated to whiplash, and back trouble, all thats un-provable...

The general public at large have to think whats best for themselves in the long run... Make huge and un-necessary claims against Companies because they can, making Companies introduce policies to prevent it happening, or go back to the OLD FASHION way, of taking a minor knock or injury on the CHIN, and forgetting the money grabbing way thats become standard today

I was going to say that!!! Humph! In agreement though. I'd put a big bet the striking bus driver from earlier isn't working. Unless they've given him a Christian bus.
