Arctic conditions have caused chaos across Hampshire today.
The region is due to face a second day of disruption as snow and ice caused major problems.
Up to 15 centimetres of snow fell on overnight night, bringing travel misery and roads chaos across the region.

• Hampshire School Closures - Friday
Hundreds of schools across Southampton and Hampshire were forced to close as teachers found it difficult to get to work.
All schools on the Isle of Wight were closed for the day.
Southampton International Airport was closed for most the day but reopened at 4pm after staff moved 1300 tonnes of snow from the runway.
Bus services were also hit with some some companies suspending services and others running a limited service.
But the bad weather is with us for a while.
While the snow stopped falling during the afternoon, weather experts predicted the temperature will plummet to minus 12 degrees centigrade tonight.

Southampton Road, Derby Road, Nightengale avenue and Stoneham Lane were all gritted. so dont start moaning about the council when they are out there doing their best.
As much as i adore the snow because it makes my tatty garden look like everyone elses ! This morning is a suprise ! I dont remember ever seeing a dumping of snow this deep in all my 48 years ! So beautiful ! But hubby has called , he's a bus driver , and NONE of the main roads in Eastleigh have been gritted ?? Again Britain grinds to a halt because of poor council planning .. Well i'm now off to work , pushing my bike and using it as a stabliliser !! Haaha apt security word PAIN-FOOT lol !!!

Just seen two cars (one a Merc and one a Subaru) belting down Portswood Road, no lights on, sliding all over the place, and with a 2 inch gap scraped into the window so they can see out. I will await noise of sirens shortly to see if they've managed to wrap themselves round a lamp-post.
Seriously people, get a grip, drive safely :(

I am one of the lucky ones who can work from home, as could many of the idiots that I saw driving at normal speeds while I was out walking my dog this morning.
You're going to be late for work if you attempt it. Do you really want to commit suicide or injure/kill someone in the process?
As for schools shutting, I only remember that happening once during my education in the late sixties/early seventies and that had something to do with heating. All the children walked to school and all the teachers lived locally and could do the same.
One of the reasons this country grinds to a halt is because of the high distances people have to travel. Perhaps we could go back to a time when everyone worked within a few miles of home. Or, at the very least, get teachers to cover each others schools in adverse weather.

Gritting and salt can only do so much. They cannot stop 15cm of snow from settling on a road, especially when there are few vehicles passing over it to help break up the falling snow.
Sometimes we have to take responsibility for ourselves, which might mean snow chains on the car, or shoe covers to help you walk.

Is this the snow that Southy said we would never get ??
for it to snow the clouds have got to be the low level type (round about 6,000 feet) to high and it comes down has ice rain, the downs pushes the clouds higher up, so when the clouds come over the hampshire basin they are to high for snow.

Granted they cannot control the weather but this had been predicted, has snowed elsewhere for the last week and after last year I would have perfered my taxes to have been invested in some decent machinery. Ploughs are needed! (gritting doesn't cut it anymore!) Spend a couple of million on machinery to deal with this as its going to happen every year now.

A few million budgeted by councils for this would save the economy losing out on billions because people 'claim' they cannot get to work.
I was just talking to some one on email who looked out of the window, saw snow on the floor so called work and said they couldn't get out of thier road! People aren't even attempting to get to work!
I travelled 7 miles today. The roads were dodgy in places but not impossible to drive on. The M27 and M3 were clear and pretty empty. If, when I walked up my road to check out the conditions, the roads were too bad to drive I would have kitted up and walked in!
It's only a bit of snow!

see this, to read you would think they would have it all in hand. The ice is a problem tomorrow, they should try and plough major routes and then grit to ice isn't a hazard like last time. They are doing their best , there's more info this year. Off out in the car later, before ice sets in!

it like last winter snow came down the itchen valley but not down the test valley, thats why last winter you had most of the snow and we pick up the left over over this side.
and it has a lot to do with volcanic ash, check your history and weather records, one of the best records was the one by benjamin franklin 1800's when he was in paris and the summer that never was, and the earliest snow falls on records that stayed on the ground, and the freezing up of the thames and the fairs that they held on the ice

Of course Southy will know better, after all, I only live in rural Canada where we get several feet of the white stuff every year!

Now, the boring stuff;
a snowplough is reasonably inexpensive & allows roads to be cleared at speed - they clear @>100 KMPH on the main routes!. With a plough snow is easily pushed to the side after a fall & to make it most effective parking on streets in the city is often banned to give the ploughs space.
The issue with ploughing is that the ploughed snow eventually encroaches on the road space, hence roads here are wide and have more space at each side. This could be a major problem on UK roads if it were to suffer from prolonged and heavy snowstorms but it doesn't (yet that is, depending on your C/Change views eh?)
A blower on the other hand is very slow and only effective after the snow stops falling, otherwise the bit that's just been cleared is covered up again. It'll be even slower if it's being blown into a hopper that's got to be emptied.
Blowers are good for individuals who have the time to do it and are only clearing small areas.
Added to the equation is blowers are very expensive - you could get many plough blades for the cost of 1 blower.
If this is something that is going to increase in trend in the UK individuals will also need to start considering a 2nd set of rims with winter tires on them as is already normal in much of Europe and over here, makes a huge difference to driving safety on snow and ice.
My advice? dress properly & go enjoy it while it's there, throw snowballs at the miserable folk etc, it'll all be gone in a few days!

ice rain aka freezing rain and hail are different, ask miles about ice storms over there they get them 100 times worse than we do here.
whats the difference in the height from the ground to the clouds, 6,000 feet is the max distance between ground and the base of the cloud, the higher the land so the altitude of the cloud base is higher, being down here in the hampshire basin at its lowest point, here in redbridge we are only a matter of inches above sea level, so any clouds base that higher than 6,000 feet will not produce snow for us, it comes down has ice rain.
there,s nothing to thank her for life tenancies in council homes, it was in place since 1947 under the mcdonald labour government, she was the one who made the first moves to stopping it, with her idea of a 6mths renewable contract to the newly formed housing associations so they could bump up the rent every 6 mths.
it is well known that snow is different, like here we normally get prevailing wings on our shores, where has thames valley gets some protection so there less salt in the air there than there is here, how high up from sea level makes a difference to. like here we often see those very large snowflakes where up on the yorkshire moors you are less likely to see them.
take this in considerations it can snow at 6c and below, has it gets colder so the snow flakes (snow flakes is the joining of snow crystals) get smaller, the higher you are, so the snow crystals get smaller. is that simple enough for you to under stand.

Yes, we shall very much enjoy seeing this snow-based model come to light only to watch this "crooked" (crooked being the operative word) vision, melt slowly, slowly away when the truth shines down and things start heating up.

Moreover, It'll probably be the only chance that Hancock's crafty handy work will ever feature here.

We shall in good time approach the Echo with an image of our efforts acknowledging the real truth of this project. An image that we will press for publication, to halt any further repercussions which will arise from the continued snowy-whitewash failure to do so.

Does the river valley run all the way over to Dorchester? I am sure it snowed there too? This is absolute nonsense Southy. How on earth do you know what time it started snowing everywhere? do you under stand how a plane wing works, well land masses do the same it makes small amounts of pressure changes has the wind blows across and can guide low levels clouds, you can see that from here, if you look at the lampposts the snow has stuck on the north-west side of the lamppost, another sign that the snow did follow the test valley, plus any eddy's in flows.
you can see the same sort of action here on the river test, theres spot on the test that when the tide is flowing back out to sea, there is a current thats is going in the opposite direction to the out going tide current.
the same thing happens with winds. it would be a lot different if the land mass was smooth you would not get so much turbulence, but because land masses are not smooth so will you get turbulence and with turbulence you get changes in air pressure

I have NEVER EVER said "the solar system going up and down in the Milky Way" is not factually incorrect. Although “going up and down” does not the correct technical term to describe its relative motion with respect to the galactic plain, I can accept it as a layman’s approximation of the truth.
You may recall, however, that you were stating, on another story, that this phenomenon was a cause of natural climate change - which is absolute total and utter rubbish.
.
That's the problem with you. You occasionally mix with others who do know what they are talking about, and/or watch an informative science documentary, but you are unable to follow the full meaning of what is said and, in addition, are unable put such information into the correct scientific context. Then, several months or years later you regurgitate small snippets of what you think you had remembered, from multiple sources, and put them all together into an endless stream of pure scientific gobbledegook.
.
I’m no meteorologist, thus I haven’t commented on the accuracy of your ‘how snow exclusively works only in Hampshire’ posts – but I’m deeply suspicious from the little I do know that you are again talking twaddle.

Then, several months or years later you regurgitate small snippets of what you think you had remembered, from multiple sources, and put them all together into an endless stream of pure scientific gobbledegook.
.
I’m no meteorologist, thus I haven’t commented on the accuracy of your ‘how snow exclusively works only in Hampshire’ posts – but I’m deeply suspicious from the little I do know that you are again talking twaddle.
and the only thing i will agree on some of the green movement is a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for us live in and for the future generations to come. and that,s all. man made climate change is false propaganda, its nature that controls climate, and nature will do what it wants to and when it wants to. we will not be able to stop it.
and to just to get to under stand about climate and weather it has to come from multiple sources, any true climatologist will tell you that, it has to take in from over 100 different branches subjects from the lowest of science to the highest form science, there,s is so much information about it that there is no single computer in the world that could cope with the information.
i all ready know when the true climatologist thinks that they have all the information, they will be doing what nasa did a few years ago, and that is to ask the worlds people for there help in procession the information, by letting them use your,s and mine computer,s.
this is how much information your dealing with.
.
southy, you say “to under stand about climate and weather it has to come from multiple sources, any true climatologist will tell you that, it has to take in from over 100 different branches subjects from the lowest of science to the highest form science,”

An no, pot not calling the Kettle black. I make a point to make connections to the story on which I post in order to bring up my old chestnut regarding the controversial Spitfire Monument result. Just like my comment on making a snow based model of it, and sending a photo into the Echo, posted earlier today above. A comment relating directly to the news story regarding the snow and at the same time nudging my pet subject as you say, in there at the same time.

Especially when it's getting down to such nitpicking as to whether it's a use of quotation marks or single inverted commas, in the construction or defence of your argument is a bit too much, I think you'd agree.
