Southampton School Closures - Friday
Hampshire School Closures - Friday

Hundreds of schools across Southampton and Hampshire were forced to close as teachers found it difficult to get to work.

All schools on the Isle of Wight were closed for the day.

Video news headlines from the Southern Daily Echo

Southampton International Airport was closed for most the day but reopened at 4pm after staff moved 1300 tonnes of snow from the runway.

Bus services were also hit with some some companies suspending services and others running a limited service.

But the bad weather is with us for a while.

While the snow stopped falling during the afternoon, weather experts predicted the temperature will plummet to minus 12 degrees centigrade tonight.

As much as i adore the snow because it makes my tatty garden look like everyone elses ! This morning is a suprise ! I dont remember ever seeing a dumping of snow this deep in all my 48 years ! So beautiful !
But hubby has called , he's a bus driver , and NONE of the main roads in Eastleigh have been gritted ?? Again Britain grinds to a halt because of poor council planning ..
Well i'm now off to work , pushing my bike and using it as a stabliliser !!

Roads were awful at midnight last night even though the gritters were out and about in Eastleigh area... problem is not lack of gritting.. it is lack of traffic on the roads.. always a problem when you get snow late at night.

I trudged into work this morning with my shoe grip things from QVC (which, by the way, are AMAZING) - didn't slip once... and the roads looked awful! I didn't see any grit at all! They were all slushy and looked very dangerous... Admittedly did look very pretty though :)

just to let you know the grit trucks were out at 5.00am this morning gritting the roads as I saw them but the snow was coming down so quick it wasn't making any difference. Southampton Road, Derby Road, Nightengale avenue and Stoneham Lane were all gritted. so dont start moaning about the council when they are out there doing their best.

It's a pity some of the nubbin's out there on the road don't pay more attention to the conditions.

Just seen two cars (one a Merc and one a Subaru) belting down Portswood Road, no lights on, sliding all over the place, and with a 2 inch gap scraped into the window so they can see out. I will await noise of sirens shortly to see if they've managed to wrap themselves round a lamp-post.

Seriously people, get a grip, drive safely :(

It's winter. In winter we get snow. Okay, we haven't had much of the white stuff in the last few years, but we really should be more prepared as a country to deal with this type of weather.

I am one of the lucky ones who can work from home, as could many of the idiots that I saw driving at normal speeds while I was out walking my dog this morning.

You're going to be late for work if you attempt it. Do you really want to commit suicide or injure/kill someone in the process?

As for schools shutting, I only remember that happening once during my education in the late sixties/early seventies and that had something to do with heating. All the children walked to school and all the teachers lived locally and could do the same.

One of the reasons this country grinds to a halt is because of the high distances people have to travel. Perhaps we could go back to a time when everyone worked within a few miles of home. Or, at the very least, get teachers to cover each others schools in adverse weather.

I live along the Portsmouth Rd and have been up since 4am this morning, this is a main rd onto the Itchen Bridge, and I would have thought by 10am there would have been a gritter along. What are we paying our council taxes for, I have since learnt that this job has been subcontracted out. So the council will say "not our fault" as a cop out. I have not been able to get into work, which is at Bishops Waltham, in case I get stuck. I think this situation is scandalous as we were gvien a warning of heavy snow last night for this area, and no one has acted upon it

It's a shame, but not surprising, to see some of the comments from people criticising the council already.

Gritting and salt can only do so much. They cannot stop 15cm of snow from settling on a road, especially when there are few vehicles passing over it to help break up the falling snow.

Sometimes we have to take responsibility for ourselves, which might mean snow chains on the car, or shoe covers to help you walk.

thats not what i said cyber 1 out of 10 for effort, i said the downs and the plain protects us from the worse, unless it comes down the river valleys, like it did last year when the itchen side got snow, the test was near on clear of snow, and that what it did do last night come down the river valleys, both of them, it snowed in romsey 15 mins before it got here, north baddesley it started to snow about the same time has it did here. whitch is a sure sign its coming down the river valleys, and not over the top of the plain or downs.
for it to snow the clouds have got to be the low level type (round about 6,000 feet) to high and it comes down has ice rain, the downs pushes the clouds higher up, so when the clouds come over the hampshire basin they are to high for snow.

the poor autorities are definitely between the devil and the deep blue sea on this one. They either get pilloried for not being prepared enough for what are, let's face it, rare events or they get pilloried for wasting taxpayers money preparing for rare events instead of spending on routine problems like potholes, pavement repairs etc. they really can't win.

We could have fantastic facilities for dealing with this weather IF we accept tax rises to pay for it - what choice would YOU take?

It is entirely the councils/authorities fault. Granted they cannot control the weather but this had been predicted, has snowed elsewhere for the last week and after last year I would have perfered my taxes to have been invested in some decent machinery. Ploughs are needed! (gritting doesn't cut it anymore!) Spend a couple of million on machinery to deal with this as its going to happen every year now.

A few million budgeted by councils for this would save the economy losing out on billions because people 'claim' they cannot get to work.

I was just talking to some one on email who looked out of the window, saw snow on the floor so called work and said they couldn't get out of thier road! People aren't even attempting to get to work!

I travelled 7 miles today. The roads were dodgy in places but not impossible to drive on. The M27 and M3 were clear and pretty empty. If, when I walked up my road to check out the conditions, the roads were too bad to drive I would have kitted up and walked in!

It's only a bit of snow!

Get real, this is the worst snowfall we have had in most peoples living memory, how do you expect a country that gets this once in every umpteen years to be equipped to cope, and what exactly are you doing to help? Just be patient, grit needs traffic over it to activate it, there is no magic solution, even a coalition government haven't got the powers to make it go away. By Saturday I bet, here, we will be back to normal, the plus temperatures will gradually see a melting of what we have. The simple answer today is that if you have no real need to travel, don't do it. enjoy its beauty and wait for the improvement, it is weather, not a major disaster.

Well said. Any of the numpties out there blaming the authorities, and pointing at other countries that manage so much better, would do well to remember that in those other countries, the citizens do not sit on their arses and expect the authorities to sort every last problem out for them. The reason other countries cope so much better is as much down to the individuals' sense of responsibility as it is to the preparedness of the country as a whole. Do "the council" go round fitting snow chains to everybody's cars in Sweden? No, they don't. Here's what happens: THE PEOPLE do it themselves. You know, they realise that they are also capable of solving problems, rather than just whining about how nobody else has done it for them yet.

Silly me, I assumed that since this was a story about the weather, and all the other comments were about the weather, that your comment was also on-subject. I should have guessed that when you said "their best isn't good enough" and "whoever came up with this poor plan of action should be held accountable", that you were referring to the cost of bread on Guernsey.

Everybody else, please take care to explicitly repeat "I am talking about the weather, in this comment on a story about the weather" in every comment you make about the weather, otherwise we may not spot that you are actually talking about the weather, when commenting on this story which is about the weather.

it had a lot to do with river valleys, like the river test valley starts up by basingstoke, if it did not come down the river valley the ir would of started to snow in romsey the same time has us, and north baddsley it would of snowed there before here and romsey, but it did not it snowed in romsey first then 15 mins later started to snow in north baddsley and here.
it like last winter snow came down the itchen valley but not down the test valley, thats why last winter you had most of the snow and we pick up the left over over this side.
and it has a lot to do with volcanic ash, check your history and weather records, one of the best records was the one by benjamin franklin 1800's when he was in paris and the summer that never was, and the earliest snow falls on records that stayed on the ground, and the freezing up of the thames and the fairs that they held on the ice

I am being real. Work needed to be done so I got to work to do it. Too many people willing to take an easy day off in this country hense its going down the pan. Authorities are there to deal with stuff like this and they were ill prepared which is made worse by the fact that we had the same last year yet it is no different this time around!! You're right it is only weather so why does everything stop! It is winter winter weather will come. The 'powers that be' should be equipt to deal with it to ensure the country keeps going. The snow fall in southampton is not extreme and its no where near as bad a the stuff we had in Jan! Time to man up people.
So, just to be clear: are you actually talking about the weather in this one?
Prat!
Did you make it into work today?
Do you work?

I'm sure Southy will "prove" me wrong but blowers are expensive and slow - to clears roads effectively you need ploughs.
Of course Southy will know better, after all, I only live in rural Canada where we get several feet of the white stuff every year!
Just take it slow and careful over there folks, nothings important enough that it can't be done safely
Incidentally we still haven't snow yet here - I'm blaming Maggie.
now now miles stop blaming maggie, :-)
could it be that there is to much snow for them to work well miles, or the snow to fine and compact, the one we had here in southampton back in the sixy's, had a hopper on the back, when it was filled up they use to run it to the park and dump it there, they made a nice snow hill.
We get all types of snow here and in varying amounts.
Now, the boring stuff;
a snowplough is reasonably inexpensive & allows roads to be cleared at speed - they clear @>100 KMPH on the main routes!. With a plough snow is easily pushed to the side after a fall & to make it most effective parking on streets in the city is often banned to give the ploughs space.
The issue with ploughing is that the ploughed snow eventually encroaches on the road space, hence roads here are wide and have more space at each side. This could be a major problem on UK roads if it were to suffer from prolonged and heavy snowstorms but it doesn't (yet that is, depending on your C/Change views eh?)
A blower on the other hand is very slow and only effective after the snow stops falling, otherwise the bit that's just been cleared is covered up again. It'll be even slower if it's being blown into a hopper that's got to be emptied.
Blowers are good for individuals who have the time to do it and are only clearing small areas.
Added to the equation is blowers are very expensive - you could get many plough blades for the cost of 1 blower.
If this is something that is going to increase in trend in the UK individuals will also need to start considering a 2nd set of rims with winter tires on them as is already normal in much of Europe and over here, makes a huge difference to driving safety on snow and ice.
My advice? dress properly & go enjoy it while it's there, throw snowballs at the miserable folk etc, it'll all be gone in a few days!

for it to snow the clouds have got to be the low level type (round about 6,000 feet) to high and it comes down has ice rain, the downs pushes the clouds higher up, so when the clouds come over the hampshire basin they are to high for snow

Also I think you will find most people call ice rain ….’Hail’. Have you been practicing long to be an idiot because you are getting better at it
stay local your less bright than brite spark.

ice rain aka freezing rain and hail are different, ask miles about ice storms over there they get them 100 times worse than we do here.

whats the difference in the height from the ground to the clouds, 6,000 feet is the max distance between ground and the base of the cloud, the higher the land so the altitude of the cloud base is higher, being down here in the hampshire basin at its lowest point, here in redbridge we are only a matter of inches above sea level, so any clouds base that higher than 6,000 feet will not produce snow for us, it comes down has ice rain.

there,s nothing to thank her for life tenancies in council homes, it was in place since 1947 under the mcdonald labour government, she was the one who made the first moves to stopping it, with her idea of a 6mths renewable contract to the newly formed housing associations so they could bump up the rent every 6 mths.
it is well known that snow is different, like here we normally get prevailing wings on our shores, where has thames valley gets some protection so there less salt in the air there than there is here, how high up from sea level makes a difference to. like here we often see those very large snowflakes where up on the yorkshire moors you are less likely to see them.
take this in considerations it can snow at 6c and below, has it gets colder so the snow flakes (snow flakes is the joining of snow crystals) get smaller, the higher you are, so the snow crystals get smaller. is that simple enough for you to under stand.

Infact if this all happened a day earlier you could have put them in for an I Am Southampton Award! And what exactly do you propose "they" do about the weather? Set up an agreement with God?
Where did I say they should do something about the weather?! I said in a previous post that whilst they cannot control the weather they should have plans in place that will work especially as they have had plenty of notice!
*sigh*
What?
You need it dumbed down? Ok, pay attention: You have prattled on repeatedly about what "they" should have done, and given the context, it's pretty clear you think "they" should cope with the weather - you know, the subject-at-hand - better. Trying to wriggle out of it by some "I never actually said 'weather'" technicality is actually an admission that you have no faith in your own argument. Well done
Your argument is very strange. I never once said the Government should control the weather or make an agreement with god as you put it. I am not trying to wriggle out of anything. I stated; "Granted they cannot control the weather" and never once suggested that the government or council should be able to control the weather. I said that they should have been better prepared as this was pre-warned and lessons should have been learnt after the snow in Jan. So your argument is where?
My argument is above you. Perhaps it would help if you explained what you meant by the apparently-meaningle ss comment "their best obviously isn't good enough". Or would you prefer to carry on trying some linguistic gymnastics in lieu of actual debate?
What is so difficult to understand?!

I quoted freemantlegirl2's comment about the council clearing the roads which said "They are doing their best"

I replied "Their best obviously isn't good enough" with regards to the fact the council isn't doing a very good job of clearing the roads.

Then you go off on some tangent. Is the cold getting to you? How can I make it any clearer?

I've formulated a team and we're getting together to start work on the construction and DESTRUCTION of Nick Hancock's Monumental controversial Spitfire monument design.
.
Yes, we shall very much enjoy seeing this snow-based model come to light only to watch this "crooked" (crooked being the operative word) vision, melt slowly, slowly away when the truth shines down and things start heating up.
.
Moreover, It'll probably be the only chance that Hancock's crafty handy work will ever feature here.
.
We shall in good time approach the Echo with an image of our efforts acknowledging the real truth of this project. An image that we will press for publication, to halt any further repercussions which will arise from the continued snowy-whitewash failure to do so.
.
Publish and despair Murry your Spitfire shambles! Publish and despair!

Just like the snow Southy, I fear MS's wry comment has gone right over your head!
cic not go over my head at all, was trying to hide it from the echo. it will only get deleted now.
Wrong yet again! Also, the direction of approach was nothing to do with river valleys. Straight from the north east. Never mind, you can always go back to the volcanic ash excuse!
it had a lot to do with river valleys, like the river test valley starts up by basingstoke, if it did not come down the river valley the ir would of started to snow in romsey the same time has us, and north baddsley it would of snowed there before here and romsey, but it did not it snowed in romsey first then 15 mins later started to snow in north baddsley and here. it like last winter snow came down the itchen valley but not down the test valley, thats why last winter you had most of the snow and we pick up the left over over this side. and it has a lot to do with volcanic ash, check your history and weather records, one of the best records was the one by benjamin franklin 1800's when he was in paris and the summer that never was, and the earliest snow falls on records that stayed on the ground, and the freezing up of the thames and the fairs that they held on the ice
So nothing to do with wind direction, and the way clouds blow our way then? How about when we get a westerly air flow? Does it not follow that it rains in Bournemouth, then Ringwood, and then here? So why would it not be quite logical for clouds to blow in from the North East, from Basingstoke, then Winchester, then Baddesley, and finally Millbrook, when the airflow is from the North-East? Does the river valley run all the way over to Dorchester? I am sure it snowed there too? This is absolute nonsense Southy. How on earth do you know what time it started snowing everywhere? Its all made up Southy, and you know it is!
where romsey from us, your way of thinking it would hit with a north-east wind baddsley first has that would be closes to a north-east wind, but it did not baddsley got hit after romsey and romsey is west of baddsley not east.
do you under stand how a plane wing works, well land masses do the same it makes small amounts of pressure changes has the wind blows across and can guide low levels clouds, you can see that from here, if you look at the lampposts the snow has stuck on the north-west side of the lamppost, another sign that the snow did follow the test valley, plus any eddy's in flows.
you can see the same sort of action here on the river test, theres spot on the test that when the tide is flowing back out to sea, there is a current thats is going in the opposite direction to the out going tide current.
the same thing happens with winds. it would be a lot different if the land mass was smooth you would not get so much turbulence, but because land masses are not smooth so will you get turbulence and with turbulence you get changes in air pressure

They are not quotes, there are in fact single inverted commas.
There would be no need for quotation marks as people are generally allowed to speak for themselves (sic), whether – (see, still almost staying on topic), – you like it or not.

Have I at any point even hinted that someone else is not allowed to speak for themselves? No. All that's happened is, I've challenged what I see as a flimsy argument, and some random uninvolved stranger has decided that for some reason he can extrapolate X Y and Z about the character of myself, and those I work with, despite having never met any of us. Bit odd, really, given "his" penchant for freedom of expression. Perhaps you feel that freedom is only extended to those whose view you share?

Let's hope the 'people' have a big enough facility to accommodate your ego then.
Any particular reason why you put quotes around the word people?
You're right on one point, wrong on two: sure you're be able to work it out.

You hate doing what? Actually presenting evidence for your argument? I'll say. It's the first time I've ever seen you do it. Every other time, and I do mean EVERY, you just claim it's up to everyone else to look up the proof for your own arguments. Quite bizarre, really
i hate doing because the post gets removed, plus i do my own research like every body else should do there own, they will learn other new things while they are trying to find what they want to find, and maybe they just might share what they have found out on other things.

oh southy, you do persist.
.
I have NEVER EVER said "the solar system going up and down in the Milky Way" is not factually incorrect. Although “going up and down” does not the correct technical term to describe its relative motion with respect to the galactic plain, I can accept it as a layman’s approximation of the truth.
You may recall, however, that you were stating, on another story, that this phenomenon was a cause of natural climate change - which is absolute total and utter rubbish.
.
That's the problem with you. You occasionally mix with others who do know what they are talking about, and/or watch an informative science documentary, but you are unable to follow the full meaning of what is said and, in addition, are unable put such information into the correct scientific context. Then, several months or years later you regurgitate small snippets of what you think you had remembered, from multiple sources, and put them all together into an endless stream of pure scientific gobbledegook.
.
I’m no meteorologist, thus I haven’t commented on the accuracy of your ‘how snow exclusively works only in Hampshire’ posts – but I’m deeply suspicious from the little I do know that you are again talking twaddle.

Yes, Southy, I am sorry over that messed-up job. That may well be the last time I commission a graffiti artist to do some work for me! I think it was a case of jealousy really. Shame though, cause if they had done a good job I could may well have then told them to tosh-up something next to it regarding the controversial Spitfire monument result. Afterall, there surely is "no future" there either, I think both pieces combined would have made a beautiful statement, a marvellous bit o' art for the city!

oh southy, you do persist.
Then, several months or years later you regurgitate small snippets of what you think you had remembered, from multiple sources, and put them all together into an endless stream of pure scientific gobbledegook.
.
I’m no meteorologist, thus I haven’t commented on the accuracy of your ‘how snow exclusively works only in Hampshire’ posts – but I’m deeply suspicious from the little I do know that you are again talking twaddle.
its not twaddle ff, its all got to be taken into account. weather if it happens on the planet or has far out pass our galaxy, man can not alter the weather it is beyond our control.
and the only thing i will agree on some of the green movement is a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for us live in and for the future generations to come. and that,s all. man made climate change is false propaganda, its nature that controls climate, and nature will do what it wants to and when it wants to. we will not be able to stop it.
and to just to get to under stand about climate and weather it has to come from multiple sources, any true climatologist will tell you that, it has to take in from over 100 different branches subjects from the lowest of science to the highest form science, there,s is so much information about it that there is no single computer in the world that could cope with the information.
i all ready know when the true climatologist thinks that they have all the information, they will be doing what nasa did a few years ago, and that is to ask the worlds people for there help in procession the information, by letting them use your,s and mine computer,s.
this is how much information your dealing with.
Explain to us how you alone are privvy to all this information, southy
No reply from the super-brain, I see HL.

southy, you say “to under stand about climate and weather it has to come from multiple sources, any true climatologist will tell you that, it has to take in from over 100 different branches subjects from the lowest of science to the highest form science,”
.
Perhaps you actually ought to read the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report.

An no, pot not calling the Kettle black. I make a point to make connections to the story on which I post in order to bring up my old chestnut regarding the controversial Spitfire Monument result. Just like my comment on making a snow based model of it, and sending a photo into the Echo, posted earlier today above. A comment relating directly to the news story regarding the snow and at the same time nudging my pet subject as you say, in there at the same time.

I'm sure you can see where I am coming from then ff, I have not been here long so I am not as well versed in the traits of other characters here. So for me the course of these such exchanges all get very bizarre.

Especially when it's getting down to such nitpicking as to whether it's a use of quotation marks or single inverted commas, in the construction or defence of your argument is a bit too much, I think you'd agree.

As you know ff, If you're gonna take someone's point to bits, give the response more thought and substance (As yourself, and others have done). If the course of this tread had stayed on the weather indeed I would too have been of the same mind as you Amusedonlooker, there is so much woe on how we are handling the snow!
.
I stayed up extra late last night and went outside for a bit to see the snow falling. It was magical, untouched. And I was surprised to see how light the darkness was for night-time, quite an experience. Such a shame now that everyone's been plodding about in it and now it looks like a right old blotchy mess by comparison to when it first fell.
.
Anyway I do hope they'll be enough good stuff left to construct that ill-fated Hancock Spitfire Monument tomorrow. Then, how I'll enjoy watching this calamity melt away when the heat is turned up a bit. (see freefinker, still tapping my pet subject with the news story in one!).

You see IanRRR, as I can telll, if you just read the paper and didn't go online to read the story and public reaction to it, and particularly the comments of the 6 finalists, the matter has been whitewashed in print. Cause the Boss of the paper is on the committee and it should have been his job to keep his readers informed to any "admin errors" or changes to the shortlist, as he knows about them! What did he keep quiet for? A terrible mistake. He is in a great deal of trouble, I can only begin to imagine!

Right. To all.

IT IS SNOW. IT IS SLIPPERY. THEREFORE, BE CAREFUL AND TRAVEL ONLY IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO. Stop expecting the Government to wipe your behinds and do something yourself. Take the dog out, have a day by the fire, go to work. But for goodness sake STOP complaining! I walked a good couple of miles today and you know what? It was very enjoyable! Takes things back to before computer games and TV. It's fun, and it's novel so STOP #''*^&%£ COMPLAINING ABOUT IT.
Thread, and there'll... I do hate typos.

Yes, I am beginning to catch on. As I say though, for the general site visitor who is less aware, these heated exchanges are a bit much, which I'm sure does the Echo site no favours in terms of quality. Although most exchanges are interesting and informed, but not when it gets petty. I also take it that suothy isn't you in another guise then either!
your right there it is not me.

Just got home 06:00 after a night-shift and it is pretty lethal out there, the temperature has dropped several degrees in the last hour and the pavements are getting more and more dangerous, so please take care.

Perhaps you will also identify those who make up stories and when challenged claim their words are being twisted. Alternatively that when several people point out the glaring errors in their statements, they claim they are being harassed by multi name users.

I have a long list of unanswered questions that grow by the day, yet when ever I ask for clarification I get ’do you own research’ which is very difficult when it is the other person who makes the claim which has bee unsubstantiated.

what up stay local, you carry a chip on your shoulder where you been giving miss-leading information. with your right wing views. why don't you just admit, that you and your kind have had far to easy, and had it far to long bulling your right wing views in to people and driven any one that have had a different view away. well here's news for you that has come to an end, there's people coming on here now that don't let cyber bullies get to them. your views are not the only views out there, and you need to learn that, you have a choice's put up with it and learn how to debate, don't read any posts, don't bother coming on here, and a number of other choices.

and that,s right you should do your own research, every one should do there own research its the only way you know that your getting the best information that you can, or go there and find out the information required first hand and not third and fourth hand information like you get on the internet. life is not all one sided like you believe, its multi sided and the sooner you realise that, the better it be for you and your state off way of thinking. so get over it, and if you can't then get a life out side the internet.

Haaha apt security word PAIN-FOOT lol !!!
just to let you know the grit trucks were out at 5.00am this morning gritting the roads as I saw them but the snow was coming down so quick it wasn't making any difference. Southampton Road, Derby Road, Nightengale avenue and Stoneham Lane were all gritted. so dont start moaning about the council when they are out there doing their best.
What's wrong with the roads and pavements in Eastleigh? Nothing that a few shovelfuls of grit wouldn't cure. All the side roads and pavements NEED GRITTING council workers with bins, shovels and grit desperately required, apply at council depots Can you remember the "Good old Days" within 24hours pavements and road junctions were all gritted by HAND sorry shovel.
