Snub for heroes parade

Snub for heroes parade Snub for heroes parade

MAJOR high street stores were last night accused of turning their backs on Hampshire’s military heroes.

Thirteen shops in Southampton city centre refused to put up posters backing soldiers who will march past their front windows from 11.20am on Tuesday next week.

All claimed it would breach company policy.

Other stores originally refused but did an “about turn” when the Daily Echo contacted their head offices.

Three hundred squaddies from the 1st Battalion, the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment – known as The Tigers – will take part in the homecoming parade afer tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We asked local stores to promote the Hampshire Tigers’ homecoming parade through city, see today's Daily Echo to find out which stores refused to put up a poster.

I have a bit of a problem with the Echo attempting to stoke the fire in relation to the return of these troops. If individuals or corporate bodies choose to get involved,it should be as a result of their own personal choice.
Personally I admire their courage for the work they are undertaking and have sympathy for any lives lost previously or in the future, but I won't be forming part of any welcoming party. These unfortunate chaps plus many others have been used as pawns in a Bush/Blair venture which has gone horribly wrong. The sooner all of the British Troops are withdrawn the better.

The Daily Echo makes me sick.
If the advertising poster in question is half as shoddy and poorly constructed as the so called journalism in this rag, then I applaud any shop manager choosing to take a stand against the Echo's pressure tactics.
Why give in to the in-bred (if you're not with us, you're against us" BNP leanings.
Stick it up your rear, Daily Echo.

What are these people, who have never served their country, but enjoy the freedom these brave men accord to them thinking about?
Let's all of us hang out the bunting and flags, to throw these brave men and women, the welcome home they deserve.

Yes, the troops deserve all the support we can give them. However, criticising shops who have a policy of not displaying posters, because they wouldn't display a particular poster, is simply a cheap trick for a negative headline. How about this for a headline instead: "We asked local newspapers to promote the positives about our city. Guess who said no? SHAMEFUL!"

Par for the course,
after years of this stinking Labour
Government doing all it can to take away
any feeling of pride
and love for this our wonderful country
is it any wonder people don't give a
**** anymore.
When people have it drummed into them it's wrong to fly our
flags etc in our country, how they send
our troops to war but
almost expect them to fight under the
Queensbury rules,and
then prosecute them if things go a tad
wrong what does that say about our troops.
War's a dirty business and our troops do a truly
wonderful job.
It's so sad when their own countrymen
can't or won't support them.
Well, if they won't
support our young
British troops don't
support their shops.
Boycott them, let them see what no
supports like.

This 'support our heroes' nonsense is galling. The true heroes in our society are passed over routinely on a daily basis - people that truly have an impact ie Teachers, Nurses, Firemen, Doctors etc.
That said, I do applaud the troops, but unless they were fighting a true and just war specifically protecting our nation then I will not play a part in any celebratory gestures. I remain pleased the they arrive home safe and well and have sympathy for those that don't and their families.

By trying to help sort out the country that was responsible for 97% of the worlds Opium production in 2007... I think they are specifically protecting this nation.

salmanrushdie says...

I hear an echo of hypocrisy reverberating here. Using easily backable causes to generate news through blackmail - especially when you have an vested interest editorially - I think is utterly wrong. It's totally understandable that big corporates can not preference one cause over another, however great they may be seen on a subjective basis - otherwise how can a business turn down any good cause - the whole front display wondows would become a post for external bodies because it requires a corporate to develop a judgemental character to determine who's to display. The alternative: the front pages of the local daily saying they chose x cause but not y. But here's the hypocritical crux that really questions the editorial intelligence of the paper...
If the Echo thinks that it can hegemonically dictate what businesses display on the basis of it being a 'good cause' (let's be clear, this is not disputed but is not the point here), surely it should be sharing that gesture whenever a good cause gets in touch with the paper and asks them to devote a front page to it? I urge Oxfam, Greenpeace and everyone else with a good cause to get in touch with the Echo and ask them to run their stories and promote their causes - it would be wildly hypocritical of them not to now. Spot the problem?

BrixtonSaint says...

I find it incredulous that the Echo is continually berating everyone from SCC to shops and it fails time and again to mention the day on which the parade is being held. Look back in the archive over the past few days. Did these 'journos' actually do a National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) course or not?

It is YOUR nonsense that I find galling, especially on a day when the Tigers have lost one of their number. Sure, teachers etc do a great job but few risk their lives on a daily basis, often against an invisible enemy. Firefighters face danger, true, but lets not forget who stepped in and did their job in 2002, mostly on less money than the firemen were complaining about.

Having carried the Regimental Colour for the 2nd Bn on three occasions, I know that these freedom parades are not about the glorifying of specific conflicts but a recognition of the protection that people volunteer to afford us against attack, direct or otherwise, or even the whim of a trade unionist.

Get off your high horse and show some respect.

Didn't the troops go there 8 years ago to flush out Bin Laden as opposed to limit the supply of heroin?
Miserable failure on both counts it seems....

If the echo asked me to put up their free advertising in my shop, I'd agree - on the basis they gave me some free advertising in their cheap rag in return - I'll even mention the troops in my advert - so if they refuse its because they are unpatriotic, disrespectful etc.

This kind of journalism is very unpleasant - display our poster else we'll accuse you of not caring.

This has annoyed me so much I've had to sign up. Why should all those shops be 'named and shamed' for not putting up a crappy poster which is just free advertising for the Daily Echo? Would the newspaper be giving them free advertising in return? Pathetic attempt to create a story out of nothing.

its local news what do you expect? besides I don't think a war that's involving thousands of people from this country is a 'story out of nothing' this march is important, it recognises that we as the public care.. Obviously some people don't, which I find a shame

I respect our troops that they have arrived home safe, but what were they doing out there in the first place? Even if the Afghans buy their Nukes and arms off us, the USA or Russia, they have'nt got the range to get here and would even fall short of France(which is a shame). Pull out our troops from all these overseas conquests and defend this country of ours. Gordon Brown and his Yank counterpart are taking over more countries than Hitler tried.

Doubt it.

Most are now embedded in the Land of Milk and Honey.

Who would want to go back to that fly-blown hellhole after a taste of 21st century life.

The death rate for our young soldiers is now rising dramatically - it's time we all took to the streets in the same spirit as the US Vietnam protests of the 60s.

Afghanistan has always been a disaster - the Russians got their **** whupped so got out quick.

Leave them to their Middle Ages mentality and let them grow their dope to feed the stupid habits overseas.

There's no oil there so why are we and the Yanks still there?

Oh sorry- we are 'bringing stability' to the region. Yeah right

I'm so angry at reading about these latest pair of 18 yr olds - good mates and now joining a never ending list of casualties.

Shame on the Masters of War - Dylan had it bang on some 45 yrs ago

My gog....i have read all of these comments and I am shocked by some of them. i am married to a soldier and I have had my husband in both Iraq and Afghan several times. Every time he leave my and the children it is like saying goodbye because we do not know if he will die or not. I have 2 children who pull at his legs hysterically begging him not to leave because they think he will die, I have experienced the dreaded wait thinking my husdand has been killed only to find out it is my neighbours husdand instead. Having to talk to her after she has been told her husband would not be coming home again and her 6 week old baby will never see his dad again. I have seen sadness like this many times, I have seen the life sucked out of soldiers when they return from operatinos, having seen awful things. This is our life. We do not grumble. We do not moan. We get on with it. As army wives we are so proud of our soldiers. We know just how much it means to them to know they are support. These parades are not about the politicans and policy for god sake. They are for our boys. They do not have 9 to 5 jobs, nor are they teachers who have 6 weeks holidays in the summer -THEY DONT KNOW IF THEY WILL BE COMING HOME...Please dont tell me it is the teachers and other like proffessions that are the real hero's.... they do a great job... but live my life for a few weeks and you will truly understand what these soliders, their wives and children have to deal with. Please show some respect.
