Carer of the Year
My perfect neighbours!
FOR Barbara Reakes, 81, they are the perfect neighbours.
Now Barbara has nominated Ken and Pamela Martin for the Daily Echo Carer of the Year award, supported by Southampton Lions club.
She said she couldn't do without them as they always look out for her, invite her around to dinner, help her gardening and carry out other domestic chores.
"They are always there when I need them. They are very caring and thoughtful and always make sure I am all right."
Mrs Reakes, who is a widow and has two grown-up children and four grandchildren, has been neighbours with the Martins in Hedge End for more than 30 years.
"They are really wonderful people," said Mrs Reakes, who worked as a school dinner lady in Southampton's secondary schools and Freegrounds Junior School.
Her neighbours Ken, 69, a former insurance adviser, and Pamela, 70, who used to work as a nurse, said they were surprised but happy to be nominated.
Ken said: "It works both ways. Barbara has always been very kind to us. We have taken several people under our wing over the years because I have kept in touch with many people who I met in my work over the years.
"It is just a worthwhile thing to do to help your neighbours and we enjoy it."
The couple who have four children find time to be caring neighbours despite being kept busy with their six grandchildren.
Members of the Southampton Lions group, who every year support dozens of deserving individuals and good causes, are supporting The Daily Echo campaign.
The Lions will be holding their dinner dance on March 1 and would like to hear from businesses that can help out with raffle and auction prizes.
If you can help call 0845 833 5835.
