Sally’s dash to bag 99p bargains

A HAMPSHIRE mum bagged bargains galore to mark the opening of Southampton’s newest credit crunch-beating store.

Mum of two Sally Cooper had 90 seconds to race round the new 99p Stores in Shirley after winning a trolley dash competition in the Daily Echo.

The only thing Sally, from Park Gate, missed out on was breaking the 99p Stores’ trolley dash world record of 102 items – she only managed 65.

The 32-year-old said: “It was a great experience.”

Dozens of people queued for the official opening of the shop, which has moved into the former Woolworths store in Shirley High Street.

First in the queue was 69- year-old former Woolworths employee Dilys Ferrett, who had been waiting since 7.30am.

Dilys, from Shirley, said the opening of the 99p Stores was “the best thing to happen to Shirley”.

Not bad for the store, Echo competition and publicity for the cost of a 90 second trolley dash - £64.35

Shirley may not be the shopping capital of the south coast (I know, nor is Eastleigh!) but it certainly deserves better than a 99p store to be the best thing to happen to it! When the £1 and less stores hit a town it's a sure sign things are going to get worse before they get better (and yes, Eastleigh has a 99p store too).

lol @ surreal images.

I can just imagine the 99p shop staff arriving to open up and reporting seeing a ferret in the queue!

"Dilys, from Shirley, said the opening of the 99p Stores was “the best thing to happen to Shirley”. Aw bless.

Since a Luftwaffe strike 1943?

I agree with your comments S-L but be careful you might find your career there short lived if you reveal the trading figures too often..
