A HAMPSHIRE MP has thrown his weight behind the Daily Echo's Winter Warmers campaign to make sure the most vulnerable residents are properly looked after during the winter.

Southampton Test MP Alan Whitehead said no one should have to spend their winter being cold.

"I am more than happy to back the Daily Echo's campaign," he said. "It is often those in greatest need who can't afford to pay fuel bills and have poorly insulated houses.

"That is one of the key issues about fuel poverty, and one which needs addressing."

Launching the Winter Warmers campaign yesterday, the Daily Echo revealed that in the south-east alone about 2,900 people over the age of 65 will die as a result of illnesses brought on because they cannot afford to heat their homes.

Furthermore, 23,218 pensioners across Hampshire will be without central heating this winter.
