HUNDREDS of campaigners have packed Guildhall Square this afternnon to show heath bosses the strength of feeling driving the fight to save children’s heart surgery in Southampton.

They have been joined by celebrity couple Sarah Parish and James Murray, who have made a special visit to the city to show their support for the campaign.

It comes as the Daily Echo revealed that 110,000 people have signed the Have a Heart petition, to save the threatened unit at Southampton General Hospital.

Currently families, hospital bosses and politicians are waving banners and singing chants in support of the world-class unit, which was judged second best in the country by the experts.

One public event has already taken place, with campaigners getting the chance to quiz a panel from the Safe and Sustainable Review team, who are running the consultation.

The second will start at 6pm.

I hate to be pessimistic but I fear that it is not a matter of improving the general standard in a reduced number of centres, but just another cost-cutting exercise with the decision having already been taken.

People tend to forget that this does not just affect Southampton, but Portsmouth and beyond to the East. Bournemouth and beyond to the West. Alton and beyond in the North and, of course, the Isle of Wight. Am not certain whether the Channel Islands would also be covered, but as there is a regular air and ferry service, they could also be involved.

This was the most important thing to take place in Southampton today.

This unit is amongst the best in the country.

Don't we want the best for our children?

Don't they learn important values from striving to be be best?

It is not just about the heart unit and how good it is, it is about the value of such facilities and how we live up to our obligation to reward and encourage the BEST, so future generations realise the importance of striving to obtain better.

Close the best and accept mediocrity and that is exactly what you will get in the future...and I for one don't want to sell the hopes and aspirations of those who strive for better, for all of us, as easily as our sadly deluded politicians would.

They do not understand the human condition and would do better to strive for better themselves!

They are elected to represent, not rule and in this case they have already been proven wrong...110,000 times, which is more than all of them can rely on to get elected in the first place!

Do the right thing, not by us the advocates but by the children who cannot speak for themselves but whom rely on your decency and integrity as elected REPRESENTATIVES!

SLEEP WELL.
