Village shops raise booze age limit to cut bad behaviour

SHOPS in a Hampshire village have raised the age limit for buying booze to 25 at weekends in a bid to cut anti-social behaviour.

Most of the Stubbington's stores and off licences signed up to the pilot project, which started last week.

For the next six months, between 6pm on Thursdays and the end of trading on Sunday evenings those in their late teens and early twenties will be unable to buy any sort of alcohol from several.

They can still buy drink in the village's pubs.

The scheme has been introduced at the request of police, who say they can confiscate anywhere up to 1,000 bottles and cans from youngsters in a week, and are determined to stamp out underage drinking in the area.

Drunken youngsters congregating in the village centre have been blamed for heaping misery on residents, and officers say they think young adults are responsible for buying minors their booze.

Crofton News and Booze in Gosport Road is one of the shops to sign up to the initiative.

A spokeswoman told the Daily Echo the early indications are that the scheme was popular in the village.

The scheme is due to be reviewed after six weeks.

The shopkeepers simply do not practice what they preach in Stubbington, selling booze to adolescents is good business for them. Not once have I been asked for proof that I am over 25 in the off licence, or any other shops in the village.

its not always the young people under 25 buying drink. a lot of the time its older people buying it for them. and also its not alway the younger ones in trouble go to the general at night you will see 45/60 years olds out of there heads so stop blaiming all the kids. im 43 and have my eyes fully open!!

25 seems a bit ridiculous, at 25 you could be a Doctor, Police Officer or have any kind of job with lots of responsibility yet, you can't pick up a bottle of wine on your way home from work.

A blanket ban seems like rather a lazy way of dealing with the issue, why doesn't someone in the community try to tackle the cause of the problems?

Even the thickest kids in this horrible little skate village are clever enough to buy beers on Mondays - Wednesdays. Even if they don't I suspect their vile parents will buy beer for them.
