Portsmouth Sainsbury's store hit with booze ban after selling to kids

Hampshire supermarket banned from selling alcohol Hampshire supermarket banned from selling alcohol

A HAMPSHIRE supermarket has been banned from selling alcohol for 48 hours after repeatedly selling to underage people.

The Sainsbury's store in Farlington, Portsmouth was served with an alcohol closure notice that will come into effect at 7am on Friday.

The store will remain open but it will not be allowed to sell any alcoholic drinks.

The notice was served after staff at the store sold alcohol to young people under the age 18 three times during test purchase operations between January and March this year.

Sainsbury’s accepted the 48 hour alcohol closure instead of the option of going to court.

Sergeant Wendie Douglas, said: “Officers have carried out a number of test purchase operations at Sainsbury’s since March and on each occasion staff have refused to sell alcohol to the young people which shows they are taking their responsibilities seriously.

"Sainsbury’s have taken the failures very seriously and will continue to work with us in training their staff and refusing to sell alcohol to young people.”

Principal Trading Standards Officer, Neil Fitzpatrick, said: “After the disappointing initial results, we are pleased that subsequent re-tests have resulted in Sainsbury staff refusing to serve alcohol to persons under the age of 18.

Exactly. Worst thing about it is the little skates parents drop the little **** off in their cars and wait for them because they're too **** to get the booze themselves

48 hours of not selling booze? That'll teach 'em.

They'll make do with aerosoles or glue for a while. Sainsburys sell them as well don't they?

People that use every article about Portsmouth on this website to slag it off are either very insecure or pathetic. Both cities have problems with under age drinking get over it!

I'm not slagging Portsmouth - only Sainsbury's for what they've done. 48 hours is a joke, it should have been at least 72.

Plenty of aerosols in Portsmouth!

It's quite right that they are banned, but it should be for longer (e.g. a month).

48 hours is pathetic. Why no fine??? Sainsburys should simply take it out of the store budget. That would teach the employees to check IDs!

Be interested to know what has become of the staff that sold the alcohol.
Especially as the tills should be prompting them to ASK for id!!!!!!!!

Mind you the person selling it was probably underage as well.
Their rules used to involve a minor being supervised by an 18+ member of staff, when selling alcohol, but that supervision, owing to the usual staff shortages, was normally a harrassed member of staff nodding their head in the kids direction.
Bet things haven't changed.
Well it's cheaper to pay a kid than an adult, isn't it.

Yes it is terrible that they use such opportunities to take the pee out of the inbred pikey skate mugs who's auntie is also their mother and who's brother is also their dad

it is so simple or this supermarket if they are serious about not serving underage drinkers - they can use a age verification system like AgeSafe, SCAN-NET, or even clubscan which verify IDs - the companies claim a 100% pass rate in test purchases - one company is www.idscan.co.uk
