New crackdown on yobs in Totton

COUNCIL chiefs are launching a new crackdown on drunken yobs.

Police will be given extra powers to tackle the problem under plans drawn up by civic leaders in Totton, which has seen a spate of alcohol-fuelled disturbances.

Totton and Eling Town Council is seeking the implementation of a Designated Public Place Order (DPPO) covering the whole parish.

If the order is approved, anyone causing a nuisance will be told to stop drinking and hand over their alcohol. Those who refuse will be prosecuted and fined up to £500.

The issue was raised following problems in Rumbridge Street and other parts of the town.

Councillors complained that residents were having to put up with noise and swearing, plus streets and gardens littered with broken bottles.

Former council chairman Alan Weeks said: “The order would give police extra powers that might help. It’s worked elsewhere and should be tried here.”

However, several members of the Tory group claimed that the police already had enough powers to deal with the problem.

A report to councillors conceded that police felt a DPPO was unnecessary.

But Tory Cllr George Dart said: “I’m not convinced. The town is often littered with bottles and beer glasses that have been tossed all over the place.”

A proposal supporting the introduction of the order was passed by nine votes to eight.

Now the district council will be asked to carry out the consultation process that has to be completed before the scheme can go ahead.

I'm getting very disillusioned with some councils who always pass their drink related yob problems to the police who still have their hands tied behind their backs by the PC brigade and legislation. Having just witnessed the Italian carabinieri and the CRS in France at work British yobs would run a mile if they saw them coming but stand and abuse British bobbies. Street pastors might have some effect - they seem to have made a difference in some cities and are starting in the near future in Bournemouth at weekends.

The Police have a tall order - not only drink but drugs. I was sitting in the car at a supermarket and I quietly observed a young lad aged about 16 and leaning on his bike out of the way of passers by, systematically taking up some sort of dope and quickly taking a swig out of a bottle then spitting - I have seen this twice once in the car park at Romsey with a group of boys, in school uniform, sitting on a bench. I do not know what kind of drug that requires this constant routine. Consequently, the kids one sees drinking alcohol could quite well be feeding themselves with drugs. The whole country can be termed as teen anarchy and should be dealt with as seriously as if they were adults overthrowing the Government (although the Gov appear to be doing this quite well themselves)!. One only has to see the whole spectrum of kids from ages as young as four at school throwing themselves around aggressively - Yes, we are in the throws of serious issues and it would appear Police have their hands tied behind their backs.

If the trouble in only in parts of a town. Why can't the filth do their job - a bobby on the beat is deterrent enough. I mean a real policeman not a plastic one.

A 'new' crackdown?

What's happened to the old ones?

Ask any older cop about the way in which it's all gone down the pan.

Many foreign police have it sorted as mentioned. They dont mess about with any street yobs who deserve all that comes their stupid way

Excuse me, but isn't sorting out yobs and keeping the peace, the job of the police force and not councillors/councils
?

Of course the new
Council crackdown's
on the way.
Don't believe them,
the Council are a bunch of liars, they no more intend to crackdown on yobs now
than they did before.
Our council's are gutless, and are run by P.C.loving petty
minded rule lovers.
They would come down
harder on you if you placed rubbish in the wrong bin than
on the yobs on our
Council run streets.
We've heard it all before,it meant nothing then and it means nothing now.
Total bu****it.
