Eastleigh youngsters threatened teenager with 12in kitchen knives

THEY are the baby-faced thugs who subjected a 15-year-old boy to a terrifying knifepoint robbery.

Teenagers Jamie Summerton, James Carlton and Jonathan Gilham had armed themselves with kitchen knives to go on a tyre-slashing spree.

But when they saw their victim walking by a Hampshire park talking to his mum on his mobile phone, they decided to mug him.

Today the trio are behind bars after being locked up for a total of more than eight years.

In an unusual move, the judge made no order banning their identification so the Daily Echo can name and shame them and publish their photographs – even though one is just 15 years old.

Southampton Crown Court heard that the family of the victim had been so badly traumatised they were planning to move away from the area.

Terrified

Prosecutor Frank Richardson said the 15-year-old victim was walking by Fleming Park, Eastleigh, as night fell on August 23.

The trio saw his phone light up, and decided as a group to “take him on”.

They surrounded the terrified youngster and demanded to know if he had a mobile phone.

Summerton had a 6in cheese knife and his accomplices had 12in kitchen knives. Carlton pressed his knife against the youth but the trio let him go and he ran off.

The teens chased him and after catching him up, the boy was pushed against a fence and his shirt was grabbed. Gilham told him: “We won’t hurt you if you give us the phone.”

The phone was taken from the victim’s pocket and the muggers ran off. The court heard that the phone was returned to the victim’s sister after word about the robbery got out.

In an impact statement, the victim said he was wary of seeing groups because he did not know what might happen, and his parents planned to move away from the area next year.

Summerton, 18, of Stoke Heights, Eastleigh; Carlton, 15, of Derby Road, Chandler’s Ford and Gilham, 17, of Verona Road, Chandler’s Ford, admitted robbery and possessing bladed articles. They were sent to a young offenders’ institution for 40 months, 36 months and 28 months respectively.

Judge John Boggis QC told them: “I am told news of the robbery went around the streets very quickly. I hope news of the sentence will go round just as quickly so that you and your chums will realise that if you carry knives and engage in this sort of activity, you will go into custody. No ifs, no buts.”

In mitigation for Summerton, Barry McElduff said alcohol and cannabis had played a major part in the incident and while on remand his client had been a model prisoner.

Roderick Blain, for Carlton, said although it was clearly a joint enterprise, he had not been the instigator and had gone along with it to impress his mates.

Peter Henry, for Gilham, said the robbery had not been pre-planned. He claimed his client had reluctantly gone along with it and had never pointed his knife at the victim.

Typical Eastleigh scum bags. Should have locked them up for longer.

These kids should be given a very sharp shock. As harmless as a group of children may appear - to pass them, even drive past them causes me to be aware that they may, like a feral pack, stroll across the road in front of a vehicle with a finger up and a grin - even children of 6 have no sense and copy their elders and again with an insolence, and when walking past them hear sniggers and imitating my walk - I think most of us would be intiminated.
Most of us have an idea of why children can be like this - my firm belief that it is the modern violent DVDs; not taught from year one how to live in a civilized world - even their parents are either too soft with them and not wanting to destroy their spirit; could not care less about their upbringing; maybe could not care a toss about them. But my bet are those DVDs

The mitigations:

alcohol and cannabis had played a major part in the incident

And? So they were also involved in underage drinking and illegal drugs, and also unable to control themselves under the effects. Further sentencing, please

it was clearly a joint enterprise, he had not been the instigator and had gone along with it to impress his mates.

So he robs people at knife-point, not for any financial gain, but to show off? I can understand, but not condone, those who steal to eat. Doing it to impress someone? Nah. Not a mitigation

the robbery had not been pre-planned

So they're wildly impulsive, and could in fact repeatedly offend, given their inability to handle drink and drugs, their desperation to show off what tough little gangstas they are to each other, and the fact that they will, on the spur of the moment, just rob someone at knifepoint? Harsher sentences, please

Maybe, as claimed, not preplanned, but for what legitmate reason would they be carrying 12" knives?

In my opinion is not long enough, but is a harsher sentence than we have normally seen.
Other Judges please note, it can be done.
So do it.

Please, please, please can we castrate these non-humans? Obviously we can't, so we all have the offspring of these scum to look forward to in the future.
How about naming and shaming the feral parents? They have done such a fine job of raising these pillars of our society.

As least there were named - most judges and lawyers don't allow the naming of under 18's. Let's hope all the other thugs and delinquents in the south get the idea that you can't go around mugging people?

Get this tiger by the tail - we are supposed to be superior human beings - In the normal family if these bad traits appear - with a bit of boot and a kick in the pants - show them who's boss - THE HEAD OF THE FAMILY - male or femail. Believe me, you will regret it when your hatchlings come home to roost!

Cowards, picking on some younger lad as he was speaking on the phone to his mum. These boys look more like little girls than thugs. Would have been a difrent story if they had tried it with someone older! If i was the boy on the left i would be a little nervous about going to prison! With a pretty face like that. The lads in their will think xmas has come early!

well done Judge John Boggis QC. At last a judge willing to act against teenage thugs.
using cannabis use as an excuse is lame. we all know that makes you lazy rather than violent. i think the parents need locking up too, after all this type of problem starts with bad useless parents who dont control there kids.

I think they should of got longer sentences. So what if they are just kids they should learn that it isn't hard nor clever to carry a knife. How the hell didn't their parents relise that such a big knife had gone missing or see them carring one??? I say well done to the Judge who named and shamed them. Lets just hope they relise that they are stupid little boys trying to act tough.

For the vicim - I'm sorry that this happedned to you but don't feel that you have to move to feel safe, stay stong.

They don't care about criminal records. That's only a minus if you're planning on applying for a job, remember. They're not "for good" anyway. The conviction will be spent in a few years, and effectively, no longer in existence

Yeh it's still a light sentence, but a step in the right direction, if you ask me. People have been sentenced far less for far more serious offences. Plus, the crims have been named-and-shamed. Let's hope this not only sets a precedent, but also starts some sort-of game of justice conkers, with magistrates and judges trying to out-sentence each other.

I reckon we should form a justice watchdog

What a load of rubbish. I have known the Gilham boy for many years and he has alawys been an unsavoury character. He has been allowed to run the streets in Fair Oak for years causing endless amounts of damage and trouble. I am pleased to see that another waste of space has been put away. It is a shame that the rest of the delinquents in Fair Oak cannot also be put away, so that once again it can be a safe village. Keep up the good work judge!
