Last Orders for Glass

The Daily Echo campaign, supported by the police, is to encourage late-night bars and clubs in Hampshire to switch from glass to plastic.

Pole dancers go for safety first with plastic

IT'S A case of safety first at a Southampton pole dancing club.

While trained dancers perform highly skilled routines on stage, staff behind the bar are taking no chances with slip-ups after deciding to switch from glass to plastic glasses.

The club is the latest nightspot to back the Daily Echo's Last Orders For Glass campaign launched in a bid to increase safety and reduce injury in the city's bars, clubs and pubs.

Poletrix has made the switch from glass to plastic pint and wine containers because managers felt the move would increase customer and staff safety.

Victoria Andrews, manager of the Above Bar Street venue that is open seven nights a week, said: "We are happy to support the Daily Echo's campaign and the local police by using polycarbonate containers. We feel it's an important step forward for safety. It is also more hygienic, durable and customer friendly.

"People have asked why the change has been made and generally they have been very supportive."

Club dancers Chelsea and Carly showed their support for the move by raising a plastic glass while wrapped around a pole.

Mrs Andrews said the club, which opened just three years ago, felt that it was appropriate to join other venues in making the switch.

For the club one of the main attractions of the polycarbonate containers is their durability.

"Their durability alone makes their cost worthwhile," she said.

"Initially it is more expensive. Most of our glassware came free from the brewery. Eventually the initial outlay will be justified by the longer durability."

However, the one obstacle to going completely plastic is with bottled lagers and other drinks as the breweries only supply these to Poletrix in glass.

"We have asked the brewery but they are not prepared to provide plastic bottles for the time being," said Mrs Andrews.

"In the meantime we will decant bottles into glasses."

The move has not dented the club's popularity with regulars continuing to flock to the venue which boasts a selection of different bars and stage shows and is a particular favourite with stag parties.

It is the latest venue to support the Daily Echo's campaign that has been supported by Hampshire Police, Southampton City Council and Southampton General Hospital's Accident and Emergency Department.

Other Southampton late night bars and clubs that have made the switchover from glass to plastic are Sobar in Bevois Valley Road, The Junk Nightclub in London Road, The Walkabout in the High Street and the new multi-themed club called Oceana due to open in the city's Leisure World complex.

The Daily Echo's campaign was launched after new figures showed that more people are being admitted to Southampton General Hospital following glass attacks than ever before.

Doctors and nurses treat around 250 victims of such attacks every year, with many people left scarred for life.

Across Southampton fewer than one in ten nightspots currently use the polycarbonate containers.

The move has not dented the club's popularity..."

I dont think the club is frequented by people whose main conern is how the drinks will be served.

Came here for the same reason as you, to read the story.
We are all entitled to our opinions and views, and as free speech(in this case, written comments) is still permissable, we choose to do so.
I suggest that those who do not seek or want publicity, do not lap dance in clubs or appear half dressed in a local paper.

i do agree. but lashing out on the girls is unfair there here to promote the idea. 2 years ago i got glassed in the face loosing the top of my mouth and teeth. a very painful and expensive experience.I highly support for the go ahead for polycarbonate.we are backing up local police and other venues in the city backing the idea up. talking about the girls and what goes on in the venue is a different story.

I sympathise with your experience, but the I think the girls are fools for allowing their picture to be taken in that style and taste.
What would be wrong in having them fully clothed and stood by the bar, or a table, instead of they way they are in this picture.
Yes, they are promoting a good cause, but the comments on here suggest this is lost because of the picture.

Chelsea, it's naughty to have boyfriends and husbands.

I think the girls look great. Beer tastes better out of glass not poxy plastic. If someone wants to hurt someone they will lets have rubber pool cues or blow up bar stools as well.

I have been going to Poletrix regularly for almost a month now. The girls are stunning, the service is fantastic and it's a really relaxed and friendly vibe. Anyone who has something negative to say should either go to the venue to actually find out or keep their comments to themselves. The point of these comments pages is to comment on the article, not to be personally offensive to people you don't know and have never met!!!

I have worked behind bars for years, including some top venues and can clarify for anyone wondering that beer tastes no different in Polycarbonate glasses than real ones.

I currently work at Poletrix and take real offense to the comments from some of the people here. Just because you disagree with what they do for a living does not mean there is anything wrong with it, just that it's not for you. I can tell you that the ladies are all beautiful and very respectful of themselves and others. There is nothing wrong with the way they earn there living and I for one have nothing but respect for them all.

You've clearly got very low standards, then. The girls in Poletrix are a bunch of boots, who wouldn't look out of place on Prisoner Cell Block 'H'

I fail to see why two very unattractive girls are going to promote using plastic instead of glass. This is a blatent attempt at trying to gain free publicity. I have also been to this club and agree wholeheartdly with the previous comment of Prisoner cell block H. The girls not only lack class but intelligence. I have nothing wrong with their profession at all, if thats what they decide to do. Then so be it. But what i cant stand is having to look at that when im trying to hold down my breakfast.

2. the girls are far from prisoners there beautifull young ladies.
3.the article is about A SAFER AND CONTROLED ENVIRONMENT FOR PUPLIC SAFETY.
and if you dont like it, then dont come in.personal critism about the staff that work here is not nesassary

Regardless of whether the Echo approached the club the intenton inaccepting the offer was for publicity. If you cant see that then the comment i made intelligence just proves this! Creating a safer and controlled environment? So having doorman who dont have a clue how to protect the public is creating a safer environment? GET REAL! Are you implying female prisoners are ugly then? Your argument is biased as you worked there. So sorry if i dont see your point.
