SOUTHEND United’s chief executive Tara Brady has revealed the club rejected offers for star defender Bilel Mohnsi before the closure of the transfer window.

Mohsni’s fine form has attracted interest from clubs in the both the Premier League and Championship.

But Brady insisted Blues were keen to keep hold of the Frenchman as they chase a place in the League Two play-offs.

“There were a number of parties interested in signing Bilel and we received offers for him which were turned down,” confirmed Brady.

“Paul Sturrock sees him as a key part of the second half of the season and we were keen to once again back the manager’s judgement.

“We worked hard to ensure that we kept hold of our key assets and everyone is happy with the outcome.”

Southend were not prepared to name the clubs who had been interested in signing the 23-year-old but Premier League Blackpool are known to be admirers of the Frenchman.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have also been tracking Mohsni’s progress since his impressive performance against them on his Blues debut in the Carling Cup in August.

And Sheffield United manager Micky Adams was at Barnet on Saturday to watch him in action against the Bees.

Blues rejected all advances but could still have a fight on their hands to keep Mohsni at Roots Hall for much longer.

The summer signing, who was playing non-league football for Sainte Genevieve Sports in France last year, has made 21 appearances so far this season.

Mohsni also signed an extended two-year deal in September.
