Son of RJ Mitchell dies

GORDON Mitchell, the son of Spitfire designer RJ Mitchell, has died aged 88.

Dr Mitchell, best known for campaigning to raise the profile of his father, passed away on Friday after falling at his Cotswolds home a fortnight ago.

Born in Southampton in 1920, he joined the RAF himself during the war and worked in the Air Sea Rescue Division.

The father of three penned a book, Schooldays to Spitfire, which chronicles the creation of his father’s legendary fighter plane.

If you read of the challenges that Reg had to overcome in the airframe design and engine vibrations to master possibly the best aircraft of WW2 you may realize what a great engineer he really was.

The German Luftwaffe really shat them selves when Spitfires came at them more so than Hurricanes cos they were fast and lethal.

I once read entries from a translated flight log of German pilots and it was clear that Reg had 'em worried.

The German (not Nazi) pilots were good brave men and lacked little in their flying ability but couldn't stop the Spitfires
