WATCHING the Saints or your favourite play are all days out that most people can enjoy.
But these opportunities are just a dream for elderly residents at a Southampton care home.
Now staff at Abbeycroft care home in Swift Road, Woolston, are appealing for help from businesses and organisations across the region to make their dreams a reality.
Many of the people living at the residential home are suffering from dementia but they have put together a bucket list of opportunities they would like to experience for one last time.
A bucket list, which was brought to mainstream attention by a film of the same name starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, is a catalogue of experiences people want to accomplish before they die.
Some of the residents’ wishes include a chance to visit Lord Nelson’s flagship in Portsmouth, playing on an organ, a tour of a cruise ship, and watching a musical at the Mayflower Theatre.
Pam Campbell, a resident at the care home, would like the chance to watch Saints at St Mary’s.
Her niece, Lynne Short, from Bitterne, said: “I think it’s a wonderful idea. It will give them a break from the norm.
“She would love to see a show at the Mayflower or to St Mary’s to see the Saints.
“She used to enjoy going to the theatre and she follows the Saints – it will make a massive difference.”
Katie Clift, activities coordinator at Abbeycroft, said: “We think it’s about time people give things back to them.
“If it was not for these people, we wouldn’t be here. Many of them fought in the war.
“They deserve something back, even if it’s something little.
“There is so much negativity about care homes out there.
“Half of these people haven’t got family, we are their only family and it would be lovely if companies could donate one thing for them.”
