NETWORK Rail has assured passengers the line is safe after they received a call saying debris had fallen onto train tracks.
Trains through Southampton faced 20 minute delays this afternoon while engineers checked the site near St Deny's station after receiving the call at 2.35pm today.
But they have confirmed it was a false alarm and trains are now running back on time.
The caller believed the masonry had fallen onto the track from a road bridge near the station but Network Rail believe the debris had been lying near the track since a previous incident damaging the bridge which had already been made safe.
Trains travelling between Portsmouth and Southampton City Centre from Great Malvern to Brighton, Brighton to Malvern and Cardiff to Portsmouth were diverted via Eastleigh and a Cardiff to Portsmouth train was diverted via Botley and Chandlers Ford.
