A RACE night in memory of a Hampshire man who died from cancer was a runaway success raising three times more money than expected.
One hundred and seventy people turned out for the event at the Follands Sports & Social Club in Hamble in memory of Colin Sutherland who lost his battle to cancer last July aged 72.
His family, who had organised the event, had hoped for a turnout of between 70 and a 100 and had set themselves a target of £2,000 - in the end they raised £6,525, which will go to the C3 Chemotherapy Ward at Southampton General Hospital.
The event featured nine races, a silent auction and raffle.
Punters enjoyed a fish and chip super provided by the Codfather at Hedge End during a mid-evening interval.
Colin's daughter Jo Francis, from Hedge End, thanked all who had supported the race night and added: “The evening was hugely entertaining and was a great success, not only for raising much needed funds for the ward but also bringing together a large collection of family and friends to remember Colin.”
During the evening the guests listened to a talk by Yvonne Lewis, one of the sisters on the chemo ward that treated Colin. She spoke about Colin and explained what improvements had been made on the ward as a result of recent fundraising what plans they had for the future.
