Sailors from HMS Sultan in charity field gun haul
3:20pm Tuesday 15th May 2012 in Charity
SAILORS hauled a field gun through the New Forest to raise £2,000 for charity.
The men from HMS Sultan, Gosport, were marking the 30th anniversary of the Falklands conflict by completing a 56-mile yomp that ended at Beaulieu.
Marchwood-based 17 Port and Maritime Regiment used a landing raft to transport the gun to Lepe Beach. The regiment is based at Marchwood Military Port, where many of the ships involved in the Falklands campaign were loaded for the long voyage south.
The gun was hauled ashore along a concrete track built during the build-up to D-Day in 1944.
The gun was hauled as far as Bramshaw Telegraph before doubling back and ending the walk at the National Motor Museum and cash was raised for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, which helps past and present servicemen and their families.
