SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is taking a supersized step for charity.

The well-known chain has unveiled the world’s largest trainer – a UK size 454 – in support of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

The colossal running shoe – which took three months to make – is coming to Southampton ahead of the city’s Race for Life this summer.

Handmade by the experts behind hit television series Doctor Who, the 150kg trainer uses 19 square metres of leatherette and has an 18m shoelace.

Someone with a shoe size this big would be about 27m tall with an 11m long stride and could complete the 5k Race for Life in just 454 strides – compared to 7,246 strides for the average female.

The World’s Largest Trainer will be at Tesco Bursledon in Hamble Lane on May 14, collecting signatures and donations from customers and staff in support of Race for Life.

Organisers hope 10,000 women and girls will sign up to the Southampton event which takes place on Southampton Common on July 12.
