LET Jade inspire you. Since the reality TV star’s death in March, uptake of smear tests in Hampshire has risen by a third and now Jade Goody’s public battle with cervical cancer may encourage more women to register for Race for Life in Southampton.

Jade’s close friend and personal trainer Kevin Adams said the 5k event for Cancer Research UK is a wonderful way to support those touched by cancer.

Speaking to the media for the first time since Jade’s death, he told the Daily Echo: “To see someone you love coping with such dignity really affects you. I think anyone who has been touched by cancer or seen a relative go through it, has that desire to do something.”

The former Fame Academy fitness coach – who was by Jade’s side when she died – urged the ladies of Southampton to sign up to this year’s Race for Life on Southampton Common.

“When someone takes their last breath, the people who loved and supported them are left behind and taking part is a good way to feel you are still supporting them,” he said.

“If you have never exercised before in your life you will be able to walk 5k. It’s an achievable distance. Anyone can do it. It’s an easy walk, just like taking the dog for a stroll. Even if it takes you two hours to walk 5k – just take part.”

Last year 9,700 women walked, jogged or ran Southampton’s Race for Life, raising £564,000 to help in the fight against cancer.

This year organisers hope 10,000 women will sign up so the city can smash its £590,000 target.

The event is open to women and girls of all ages and fitness levels and many of those taking part have had cancer or are running in tribute to loved ones touched by the disease.

The Southampton race on July 12 is one of more than 230 separate Race for Life events taking place across the country this summer, including one in Winchester on June 7.

Cancer Research UK hopes the women taking part will generate a collective £60m to fund the charity’s life-saving work.
