PUPILS at Llanmartin Primary had to be rescued in fire service 4x4 vehicles after severe flooding stranded them in the school.
South Wales Fire and Rescue officers were called at 3.12pm to help rescue 25 youngsters and reunite them with their parents after Waltwood Road was deluged.
Parents had been unable to get to them at home time, with crews from Malpas and Maindee helping with the operation and Gwent Police with traffic management. The flooding had subsided by 6pm.
Flooding also closed the A48 at nearby Penhow, causing disruptions for motorists and halting two Newport Bus services to Chepstow.
The area's road network experienced further problems after an accident on the M4 westbound between junction 23A Magor and junction 24 the Coldra at 5.24pm. However, traffic flow was back to normal by 6.20pm. There was also flooding at Lower Machen.
