A HAMPSHIRE pensioner was grabbed by the throat and pushed to the floor by two thugs during a terrifying attack in her own home.

The shaken 65-year-old was assaulted after opening the door to the suspects at her home in Phillips Close, Rownhams.

People living on the estate have expressed their shock at the attack, which happened between 7.45pm and 8pm on Friday (January 24).

Now officers have launched an urgent appeal for witnesses to the assault.

Police say the men shouted “drugs” as soon as the frightened woman opened the door barged past her as she lay on the floor.

Her 21-year-old grandson was in the house at the time of the assault and went to her aid.

He managed to get the men out of the hallway and back through the door before slamming it shut.

Police are trying to trace the pair but no description has been released.

They have carried out door-to-door enquiries as part of the ongoing investigation.

Neighbours say a police car was parked at the entrance of the close throughout Saturday.

Shocked residents told the Daily Echo the incident was out of character for the area.

One homeowner, who did not want to be named, said: “It's very shocking.

“It is a quiet area but that could be one of the reasons why it has been chosen.

“We were away but it's very surprising to hear. You do wonder when you open your door.”

Another neighbour said: “I saw a police car parked on the corner of the close on Saturday morning when I went to take the dog for a walk and it was parked there for some time.

“It's horrendous - I'm amazed it has happened.

“When I saw the police car I thought we had another tragedy here. There have been unexpected deaths here but never anything like this.

“Ordinarily I feel very safe here and it's mindboggling it can happen in your own home. It makes you realise it could happen to you at any time.”

Another man said: “It is out of the blue. You don't expect it round here as it's pretty quiet, but there have been nippers coming and going.

“I bet she's really shaken up.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or spotted the two men hanging around outside the house prior to the assault is asked to contact Romsey police on 101.
