A SOUTHAMPTON doctor is to face a retrial over allegations he assaulted a woman in a hospital.

Animesh Banerjee, 47, had been accused of following the woman into an outpatients room at the Royal South Hants Hospital, Southampton, where he had been working for Care UK, before he allegedly touched her.

The ear, nose and throat specialist stood trial at the city crown court this month but after a five-day hearing, jurors were unable to reach a verdict on the two charges he faced – one of sexual assault and the other of common assault.

The prosecution was then given seven days to determine if it sought a retrial.

The Crown Prosecution Service has now announced it would, though no date for the new hearing has been set.
