HAMPSHIRE police have revealed some of the bizarre and downright ridiculous reasons given by motorists caught without their seatbelts on as they launch a crackdown on those who refuse to belt up.

From one man who did not want to ruin his tan, to others who complained their seatbelt did not fit – officers have been faced with a catalogue of excuses from drivers who have not been strapped in.

This week Hampshire police will be taking part in a second European-wide campaign that will see teams of dedicated officers from the road policing unit looking out for those breaking the seatbelt law.

It comes as research from Europe reveals that around 50 per cent of all car occupants that die in roads accidents could have survived if they had worn a seatbelt.

Checks back in March revealed that van drivers were the worst offenders, often claiming they forgot to put on their seatbelt because there were only travelling short distances.

Sergeant Rob Heard, Hampshire’s road safety officer, said: “It has been surprising how many people are still not wearing their seatbelts and not really understanding the risks they are putting themselves under.

“The devastating injuries or possible fatal injuries you can receive from not wearing a seat belt really should encourage everyone to belt up, is just not worth risking your life and the heartache your family will feel from your loss.

“It would appear that the majority of people do wear seatbelts but we still need to encourage everyone to do so.

“This campaign has been good at raising awareness and we will continue to stop anyone who is seen not wearing a seat belt.”

Those caught not wearing a seatbelt may face a fine of up to £500.

The campaign will run until September 14.
