A MAN has been arrested after a failed sledgehammer raid on a city bank.

The attempted burglary took place at Barclays Bank in Above Bar Street, Southampton.

A black moped carrying one person pulled up outside the building at around midday on Monday (Oct 20), shortly followed by a red moped with two people on.

One of the suspects then tried to break a window with a sledgehammer while another tried kicking it.

But after failing to gain entry they left the scene on their mopeds.

A 24-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and bailed until November 11.

Anyone with information should contact DC Alex Spratt at Shirley CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
