A FEUD between two families spilled into violence on a street in Southampton's inner-city area, jurors heard.

Two people went to hospital, one suffering from a broken nose, a black eye and bruising over the his body, Southampton Crown Court was told.

Prosecutor Simon Foster said there was an ongoing dispute between the Roath and Potiwal families.

“There is no love lost between them, and the Crown say this was a public order offence in which these people participated in violence. They used violence for which there is no excuse.”

Four members of the Roath family - Raja, Jaswant, Shakti and Satnam - are accused of affray following what Mr Foster describe as “an unpleasant and violent episode” in Clovelly Road last April.

He told the jury of ten women and two men Gurpal and Gudrev Potiwal had been drinking at the Giddy Bridge pub in London Road and as they were about to be picked up by their brother, Bucksheeth, Jaswant and Raja Roath appeared.

Sensing there might be a confrontation, Gurpal Potiwal phoned police.

There was some pushing and shoving and the police told them to go their separate ways.

The three members of the Roath family then drove past Jury's Inn and into Clovelly Road where they stopped, having been followed by a Vauxhall Astra.

Bucksheeth then got out the car and went across the road where he handed his phone to “father figure” Balbir Roath talk to Balbir Potiwal, who also described as a father figure of the Potiwal family to try to defuse the situation.

Gurpal Potiwal told the court the two men were still “on the line” when Jaswant and Raja Roath came running up.

Jaswant, clutching an up turned bottle, shouted: “Come on then. Who wants it?” Raja also shouted: “Come on then.”

He said Jaswant swung the bottle at Gurdev's head. “I didn't see it strike him but then I heard it fall on the floor and smash.”

He then told the court as he lay on Bucksheeth's car bonnet, he was punched up to 10 times in the face.

“It was done with clenched fists and hard. I fell to the floor. I didn't do anything or say anything to provoke those punches.”

He then claimed Shakti then punched him four or five more times in the face and he and Jaswant also kicked him.

“I had my hands up trying to protect my face,” said Gurpal Potiwal.

He said Satnam Roath then arrived and came towards him but two other relatives got hold of him to hold him back.

He then described how he leant against a wall with blood pouring from his nose and heard someone shout, “Get the baseball bats,” but he didn't see any.

Afterwards he was taken to hospital.

Raja Roath, 25, Shakti Roath, 28, and Satnam Roath, also 28, all of Bitterne Road East, and Jaswant Roath, 30, of Bassett Avenue, deny affray.
